    Up Went Nelson(in 1966).

Up went Nelson, in old Dublin.
Up went Nelson in old Dublin.
All along O'Connell Street, the stones and rubble flew,
As up went Nelson and the pillar too.

One early morning in the year of '66
A band of Irish laddies were knocking up some tricks,
They thought Horatio Nelson had overstayed a mite,
So they helped him on his way with some sticks of gelignite.

It was a bit strange that it wasn't Wellington's pillar as he was a Dub?

Wellington's Monument(a large obelisk) stands in the Phoenix Park. It was completed after Nelson's pillar. The pillar was completed in 1809(decades before the London version. Nelson was the big hero after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.At this time Dublin was probably the second city of the British Empire(although the decline after the Act of Union would begin to set in) . Wellington became the big man later, after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

The "Spire" does little to "inspire" and is more an embarrassment than a monument.
