A serif is a type of font. Like comic sans or verdana or arial etc.
An intesting fact to note is that Bob Marleys song 'I shot the sheriff' was originally going to be worded 'police' but was changed to sheriff to avoid too much controversy. But the initial theme came across very well in the song despite this.

Quite the opposite, Comic Sans, Verdana and Arial have no serifs, where as Time New Roman, Bembo and Baskerville do, but I bet you new that really.
