    Default The Local Elections Thread

On Friday June 5th we'll all be given the opportunity to vote in our local elections. The opinion polls are predicting a swing away from the government parties as people "punish" FF for their supposed corruption and mishandling of the economy, but Irish people are notoriously apathetic when it comes to their politicians. No matter how far up our collective anus Brian Cowen's cock is, we still don't all agree that we're being fucked.

With that in mind, will we reeeeeally see a swing to the Left, or (God forbid) further Right on Friday? Will the Greens be utterly decimated? Will FF plummet into the pit of their lowest support in their history? Will the biggest gain be made by FG (more of the same allegedly) or Labour? And anyway, do local elections reeeeally matter?

Heres a newsflash for you. There is no left.

This is the prob with politics in this country. We have no alternative gov.The most "Left" we will have would be a SinnFein / Labour colition and your not going to tell me thats left are you?

Labour went down the road of Irish politics with one agenda. We are a left wing party.they are not a left party. They stand between Left and right and are not left.Sinn Fein are a socialist party and again not left. All of independants derive their policies from one of the exsiting parties which of none are left wing.

The greens will go the same way as the pds went. They will slowly disintegrate. They are also a bunch of hypocrites using their Green friendly philoshopy to hide their true policies IE right wing look after the wealthy policies.

The prob is this though. The damage is done. While i think FF and the Greens should (and will be) punished badly, the damage is done.Whoever is in gov has to,has to increase taxation to some degree and also pull back welfare.Unless some mircle happens on the job front the gov ,whoever they are will have to do this to keep afloat.

I would love to see SinnFein in gov to see how their appraoch to EU and of course a mass of cheap work force coning in and destroying our economy. It would be very interesting indeed to see if SF still have that republicanism at heart.

Personally i think ,if a gen election was called ,we would have a Labour,FG and Sinn Fein coalition but dont kid yourself. That will not be a left wing gov.

    Sincerely,
    Westside.

Just a thought - Did all the Irish who emigrated and provided cheap labour in any foreign land lead to the destruction of those economies ?

youll be one of those Irish whiging and crying when the income falls even more after the next budget.

Our two main areas of emigration were US and UK.All sorts went to the US and it took starvation for alot of Irish to go.

As far as the UK goes,we helped defend their country against German invasion and we went and worked there while parts of it was being rebuilt after the war.

Before you mention "what about Austrailia?".We were sent there as part of colonial power during the times of British Empire rule.

By the way, when Irish went to work abroad ,they didnt claim more on social payments than they would make "WORKING" at home.Time for you Irish perfectionists to wake up and smell the roses while there are any left.

    a sorrowful state of affairs,

i have a problem paying more money to the gov to feed these ppl coming in here pushing Irish out of jobs by working for f'all.

i have a prob with a gov that lost control of power and need to take it back by nationalising banks (who could exagerate their losses to get more bailout money) and certain coporate entities.

i have a prob with a country that wont expel an order that ,despite be found guilty of sexual and physical abuse ,remain arrogant and nasty towards its victims.I also have a prob with a country that doesnt send these ppl for trial on crimes against humanity to the European courts just like the war crimes.

You see i have lots of probs Alec.

    Wheres Journo now???????????
