I think you misread something - there is a sex worker character, but she is not the one that died. The show starts soon after the death of his wife from cancer.

I watched it and thought it was great. If you Google it you will find it divided reviewers, with most hating it, but I think his humour is too dark for a lot of people.

If you do try it, stick with it - it is only late on that it all falls into place.
Help Keyla fund her battle with cancer - give what you can spare.

Ricky Gervais and Seth MacFarlane should write a movie together, they would possible make the greatest dark humour movie of all time.

I loved it. Absolutely loved the dark humor in it, although sometimes he took it a tad too far. But Ricky Gervais is brilliant

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think a lot of the negative reviews are coming from people who expected it to be typical Gervais, but most of it wasn't. Parts of it were very funny but from the get go it was clear that it was dealing with a very tough issue. Roisin Conaty did a great job playing the sex worker, and those few scenes were quite funny also.

    Would recommend

I had sat and watched the whole show last night.
The more i watched it, the more I realised how much I exactly like the character.

Apart from having a dead wife as he does in the show, just the way he acts and thinks, I am the same.

However, I really enjoyed the show very much.
    Very clever and very funny.
