Oliver Stone said he reckoned lots of guys his age were being patriotic by joining the National Guard,until he realised National Guardsmen were not being drafted for Vietnam.Stone himself went to Vietnam.The greatest, living American patriot prior to Donald Trump,George W.Bush(probably with Bush senior's connivance) likely pulled this stunt by joining the Texas and Alabama Air National Guards,where there is some controversy about his attendance and service.(Bush 41 himself was a Navy combat pilot in WWII).
Due to the ending of the draft for military service ,largely thanks to the trauma of Vietnam,reservists and National Guard members were deployed to Gulf War 2 and Afghanistan.The volunteer regular army hadn't enough manpower to cope.
