"The weight of a nonsensical ideology hangs heavy over the legislation. It is an ideology which insists that women are always victims, that they have no agency of their own, and that they cannot make informed choices about their lives, even if they are informed choices which many people would never choose for themselves.
The obviously ideological premise behind the Nordic model is, ironically, most exposed by the enforcers themselves.
As Detective Superintendent Kajsa Wahlberg, Swedish National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings, told an audience in this country recently: "In Sweden, prostitution is widely seen as a form of violence against women - both a cause and a consequence of inequality between men and women."
That assertion alone is a bold declaration of intent and one which, like all ideologically based laws, simply doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Nor does it take into account the sex workers who are vehemently opposed to the idea and who, ultimately, want to be left alone while they get on with their job.
Prostitution is one of the few remaining areas of public life where morality is openly flaunted when it comes to making decisions.
