Default FG Junior Minister Says Swedish Model Is Unenforceable here!

@ last a junior Minister, Eoghan Murphy, is seeing and speaking some sense on the proposed new law. In a Hot Press interview he slams the madness!

He said: “I know it doesn’t work. I’ve looked into it. We don’t have the resources to police prostitution.
We don’t have the resources to police the women in prostitution.
“We definitely don’t have the resources to police the people who are purchasing, because it’s obviously a much larger number. I don’t see it as a solution.”
Murphy’s views have been welcomed by Sex Workers Alliance Ireland (SWAI), which has openly criticised the proposed legislation.

Somewhat timely as the Gardai are entering dispute on pay and resources.

Sorry to be slightly cynical but why would a politician stick his neck on the line otherwise

The quote above does seem to suggest that he views it as a resource issue akin to a top law mans response who hasn't got enough feet on the beat. But at least it is a voice of dissent within the camp so to speak and and such is welcome.

To be fair, Dom - Eoghan Murphy does state in the piece that he's looked at the evidence and it doesn't actually work . The resources issue is a pertinent one . But as we know, the law is about the abstract principle - Not about its effect on the ground.

He's under fire from a lot of very cross antis, but I guess he knew to expect that. What is badly needed now is more politicians speaking up against what they know is bad law.

Who will be next to go against the party line?

David Ford was NI justice minister when the law changed in the north. He spoke out against the law, said it was unenforceable. Did anyone listen? NO!
And now a year on things are exactly the same up north. If anything there are more escorts and not a single prosecution.
And another thing. It’s illegal to advertise/solicit sexual services in ROI. However this web page and others are perfectly legal because you are paying for an escort’s time. So already they can’t legally stop advertising, they can’t prosecute pimps, or close brothels. So what is needed: even more stupid laws, and cuts to police resources apparently.

There are some differences, firstly this upcoming law as it stands increases the penalties on sex workers as well as imposing them on clients, secondly The relevant Minister is a conviction politician on this one and the pigz down here know this and will enforce it selectively of course i.e. the great and the good anf their own kind will get free passes on this one, like penalty points a few years ago! Thirdly how do we know that the pigz in Nordieland haven't been waiting until their Southern equivalents start enforcing it, before they start doing so!

    Hi All,

Ahh, I see the oul "Swedish Model" has raised it's ugly head again, pushed on by the "men hating" Francis Fitzgerald and Catherine Zappone no doubt.
Everyone keeps telling me how wonderful the Swedes are, "aren't they wonderful"....................NO, a country with the highest rate of depression
in the E.U, a country that has one of the highest rates of sexual assault in Europe, a country that has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in
Europe, a country that does not even have an Embassy in Ireland. That is where this ridiculous law originated.

Enough of my rant about the swedes and their crazy laws and habits, we all know that criminalizing people for purchasing sex is unenforceable, sure I
have not seen a Guard on the streets in weeks, but it is bigger than this, it is an infringement on our rights as humans, to conduct business that is
agreeable to both parties, where no one is harmed.

People who purchase sex are portrayed as depraved villains praying on trafficked women........absolute crap, I know that 99.99% of people who purchase
sex would be deeply concerned if the escort was not working of her/his own free will, and we have laws for this. Political Correctness has invaded this topic, as it has many others and
wants simple quick fix solutions to complex problems, blaming men for being evil sex devils who want to abuse women at any chance they get......
........why not criminalise smoking, gambling and alcohol as well, while we are at it.

It's more than unenforceable, it is an invasion of our human rights, when all is said and done, the most important thing is, the health
and safety for everyone involved in prostitution, not the introduction of ridiculous laws of which it's only purpose is to reduce the "demand"
for sexual services. Aside from anything else it is unconstitutional, UN-European and would be practically impossible to uphold in court.
    Solution= LEGALIZE IT.
