I am not entirely sure that you are right. With all these moaners rambling on and on it creates an atmosphere and it would be a brave lady to hike up her prices. I have also noticed very few new top class girls have arrived here lately and I think it's because of the deflated fees.

You may have a point, but I still think that the market will generally sort itself out. If the prices are set correctly then all things being equal the amount of business should be at a steady pace. Maybe the ladies can make better money in other countries, then I guess the rates would have to go up. If we are to believe that our economy is growing at the fastest rate in the EU then I guess we could tolerate a rate increase.

All the more argument for legalisation and then there could be some form of "seamstresses guild" (Terry Pratchett / Discworld reference )

For me this is a hobby considered a rare special treat. I am not a weekly punter, more a sort of once-per-month type, so if the rates go up a little its not going to kill me.

Before the crash in 2008 the going rate was 240 an hour.

So the Luas drivers, the bus drivers and soon the Gardai are all looking for a restoration of their 2008 pay..and more.

That may be true but you need to take a few things into account first.

1) They knew what they were signing up to when they started the job.
2) They are relatively unskilled and the training does not take very long
3) Many public servants who require significant education, training and have much greater responsibility earn less than they do (gardai, nurses, teachers)
4) Their salary was at or above the average industrial wage to begin with
5) They hold the country to ransom whenever they feel like a 53% increase (LUAS drivers' "Opening position")

I'm not begrudging them their representation, but when they provide a public service they have a responsibility to sort out their grievances as quickly as possible, otherwise they will incur the wrath of the public. In the case of the LUAS drivers in particular, I think a little public wrath was more than justified.

I don't know what luas drivers bus drivers and escorts make per annum. I don't think our Taoiseach should make more than the American President. I think most high ranking senior civil servants are overpaid especially when you take their pensions and expenses into account. I don't begrudge the bus and luas drivers their strike if it was a last resort in negotiating. I really don't think there was that much public wrath over the strikes, but most of my colleagues and social circle don't rely on public transport, so it may have passed me by.
