For anyone inteterested you can listen to the podcast:

I found it very " anti male ".

Sarah Carey was quite good, and i dont always agree with her. She done a good job in holding the interviews.

Also the journalist said thay she thought there was a tiny minority of escorts who actually chose their vocation. And some other stuff about men who go off to far away places for sexual pursuits - that is not me or a lot of other level headed persons on here !! Painting all punters as bad men / monsters. She writes interesting articles but this was wide of the mark.

The lady from Rape Crisis Centre made very valid points re the importance of child protection and ppl exploitation which i agree with. She also mildly hinted that there are escorts who actually choose to do what they do and not forced into it.

Therein lies the problem, transparency on the industry.

    Of the Sunday World

    Enuf said.

Funnily she adamantly continued to claim that women in prostitution were to be decriminalised under the new law.

Never mind the litany of dodgy stats that were produced as ' facts'

Laura spoke well, but unfortunately she was only brought in for part of the debate, so most of the "pro-law" contributor's statements went unchallenged, like made-up statistics that "98% of women in the sex industry are not there of their own free will".

Isn't it aaamaaazinng that 98% of women selling sex are therefore being forced against their will and the Gardai are just looking on with utter indifference, refusing to call in to their easily identifiable locations to save them?

Sarah Carey was way out of her depth trying to bat away the deluge of made up stats .

Format appeared to be a total set-up - effectively LL was 'fed' to her opponents as she herself had not right to reply to the ridiculous assertions of Tarrant et al.

Yeah the stats didnt make sense.

But it was a very one sided argument against escorts.

Im sure ppl would love to voice out against this opinionated opposition, but they way i see it, anyone who sees escorts, be they male / female / disabled / black or white are portrayed as deviant monsters. Even if its between 2 consenting adults in private.

The short answer is they do largely dream them up. The statistical basis for a lot of their arguments is flimsy in most instances. They also have a tendency both in Ireland and internationally to focus exclusively on statistics which relate to the most marginalised groups of sex workers e.g. those groups with addiction problems who work outdoors. When dealing with this sub-group it is probably correct to say that a large proportion would be forced in some way into participation. However, they then go on to argue that all sections of the sex industry are subject to the same basic characteristics. So for example they say that most indoor sex work is carried out by escorts who are either trafficked or subject to the control of exploitative pimps. They also exhibit a tendency -in line with most politicians- to commission reports that have such strict terms of reference that they are highly likely to result in the type of findings that they want to hear and which appear to justify their perspective.
Remember that many of the people(mostly women) who are bitterly opposed to sex work are employed by organisations which historically have received significant state funds which are contingent upon supposedly doing something about a social problem. Consequently they have a vested interest in ensuring that the cash cow is kept fine and healthy. Hence a predisposition toward a tendency to be economical with the truth.
