    Ennis comes from the Irish word 'inis' which has also been turned into 'inch' in English.

    Inis can be used to mean 'island' but it alse means low, lying, marshy land beside water (sea, lake or river)
    In the case of Ennis, Co. Clare, beside the river Fergus, presumably.
