Default UK Home Affairs Cmmtee advocates Full Decriminalisation ...

UK equivalent of our the Justice & Equality Joint Oireachtas Committee (who were utterly sycophantic to TORL invitees in 2012/2013) have just advocated the decriminalisation of sex work in the UK .

Real concerns were feared that the Committee had an effective pre-determination to recommend a variation of the Swedish Model but to their credit , unlike their Irish counterparts ,Committee members did actually pose crtical analysis to the issue.

Thank god, someone has at last realised that the sex industry & trafficking are 2 separate issues & should be addressed accordingly.

"Trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation is an important and separate issue from prostitution involving consenting adults."

This is welcome but a word of caution needs to be attached as it is only an Interim report and they have yet to fully assess the Swedish Model and in particular punishing the purchase of sex. However, it is to be hoped that they come down on the side of the New Zealand and German models. Also it is extremely important that they appear to be separating the mainstream industry from trafficking and exploitation.

I had feared this committee would succomb to TORLER Madness, but it did not!
It has literally demanded that solicitation by sex workers should no longer be a criminal offence and criminal records for it be quashed, and that to be done IMMEDIATELY!
It also recognizes there's a huge difference between any consenting adults having sex with each other and the trafficking of people for sexual exploitation!
There's a lot of common sense and basic decent humanity here!
The potential criminalization of the ordinary decent punter is not entirely off the agenda yet, but in its final report, it will highly probably be and a death knell for The Nordick Model in yet another civilized country!

Very valid point . But the report does make repeated reference to the lack of evidence of Nordic success, the critical distinction between consent and exploitation, the admission of SW vulnerability to a wide range of current laws (and the disparity on how does laws are actually applied by the police) , the tendency to ignore the voice of SWers by abolitionists on 'moral' grounds etc.

What was striking was that the Committee genuinely applied an 'evidence-based' approach to their findings - Something which came as a surprise considering the pro-crim framed approach of the Committee's terms of reference i.e. should criminalisation be transferred onto buyer?

Should the 'evidence-based' approach be continued then the ever-growing compendium of evidence of Nordic failure certainly steers away from its introduction in England & Wales.

Dont know whether Theresa May's almost -inevitable election as PM will be helpful though as her views would be certainly of a more Conservative nature esp in previous votes regarding LGBT rights.

I think a lot of the thinking in England and Wales is lead by public opinion which has regularly come out against laws against sex work. Who becomes Prime Minister is fortunately unlikely to change this.
Theresa May is a member of the Church of England and is reported to be a regular church-goer.
Her father was the Reverend Hubert Brasier. She has said that her Christian faith "...is part of me. It is part of who I am and therefore how I approach things".
She is likely to come under pressure from the Church of England.

Exactly the reason why religion should have no place whatsoever in politics. It's a blindspot, a way of obscuring someone from making logical decisions.

I think some of us are misreading Teresa May's possible approach to our hobby/job, in her 6 years as home secretary, where should would have had ample time if she had a frothing at the mouth hatred of sex workers/men to implement insane anti sex worker laws, she hasn't done so!
Leadsom, could possibly be a bit of a worry though!
Harriet Harman would certainly have tried it and indeed Mrs. Balls. aka Yvette Cooper had to be told at the last minute before giving a speech at the last Labour Party Conference prior to GE 2015, to take out a part of her speech she had in demanding that punters be criminalized!
She is the longest serving home secretary in either of the 20th or 21st centuries! And the last Tory home secretary to become PM was WC himself!
    Ride them on the beaches!
