The bikini is supposedly 70 years old today.French designer Louis Reard unveiled his conception ,constructed from four triangles of cloth, in 1946.It was named after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, where atom bomb tests were being conducted at the time. Perhaps he expected it to cause an explosion and indeed initially, it did indeed prove somewhat scandalous.
Two piece swimsuits it turns out, have a much older provenance than people once expected.Murals showing women in two piece costumes have been discovered in two thousand year old Pompeii.
However the modern bikini is dated from that time in 1946 when bombs were shaking the Pacific, just as the bikini sent a tremor through the world of fashion.
