    Perhaps a warning is appropriate here.

    Socks and small items of clothing should be put is a purpose-made wash bag or pillowcase etc.
    Clothes should be checked for items in pockets such as combs, tissues, coins and so on.

    A washing machine typically has two motors. One drives the drum; the other drives the pump that operates when the machine is pumping out water.

    All the water that is pumped out of the machine (and anything in it) is pumped through this pump.
    Although there is usually a trap to stop objects entering the pump, if a small object finds its way into the pump and jams it, the motor can overheat and became damaged or even catch fire.

    This has been the cause of a small number of house fires.
    And a large number of damaged machines.
