It is hard to know what will happen. I do have sympathy for her, especially since there are a lot of tennis players out there who are on steroids.
At the moment it does seem she is heading for a four-year ban.
Her press conference was attempt, to paraphrase Churchill, to have her version around the world before the athletics authority’s version had its boots on. [She did mess it up a bit with her “rich girl off the cuff comments” about the grottiness of the hotel and the poor carpet]
But people are not as simple as they once were with the internet and world news etc. People recognize spin.
I fear when the athletics authority’s version is released it will be later, but will come booted and suited and the rather, let’s face it, lame claims about it being a mistake will not hold much weight.
Plus, any other drugs claims that arise against other athletes, especially Russian born ones, will raise the profile and weaker her case further.
Tennis is awash with drugs; they have caught someone, they probably wish it was not their poster girl, but there is the danger they will make an example of her. Nike et al have bailed out to avoid being contaminated (they have been burned before) pending the outcome.
