Default For the guys that feel hard done by with the new law

First of all, I imagine some of you are enjoying the reprieve that you have been given and likely not retiring as early as you had thought you might. Good news for us girlies!

Now... for the guys that keep saying that its alright for sex workers as the finger is being pointed at them.

    Take a look at this.

    Working Indoors

Sex workers remain criminalised if found
    sharing
    the same house or

apartment with another sex worker as

they are considered to be keeping a brothel
under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences)
Act 1993. In addition the penalties have been
doubled to €5,000 and/or 12 months in prison.

All I ask is that you please stop telling the sex workers on this site that they are okay and nothing has changed for us, because until you are faced with 12 months in prison for trying to work safely I really don't think you have a leg to stand on.

In my mind this is where the new law shows itself up the most for not being there for the safety of sex workers. They know it is dangerous for us to work alone, but when the alternative is up to a year in prison you are faced with the devil and the deep blue sea. There are very few of us that won't be affected by this clause.Oh and if that isn't bad enough. Anyone caught outdoors soliciting or loitering can face prison for up to 6 months now on a first offense. It was third offense previously.

    Something to look forward to!

Oh and one more thing. Out door workers now face an immediate 6 month prison sentence if they don't move on immediately on a first offense if found to be loitering or soliciting. The warmth of this bill just keeps flowing doesn't it? You get a real sense of care for the well being and safety for those involved in prostitution be it forced or otherwise.

The original intention allegedly was to criminalise the purchase of sex on a stand alone basis with the seller to receive some form of assistance (sic) to help them exit the sex trade. However, the advice given to the DOJ was that this was likely to be ruled out on constitutional grounds. What we then got was this crap which just extends the parties involved in criminal activity and of course the bill can undergo many change/ additions while passing through parliament.

SophieX will be very disappointed new bill didn't become law.

    As for penalties have been
doubled to €5,000 and/or 12 months in prison, its only scare tactics being used here and first offence is just a minor affair but have know some judges to hand down 8 weeks imprisonment on first offence for girls sharing and everyone thought that was tough and uncalled for.

Do you as a matter of fact that the advice given by DoJ was that the one-sided criminalisation was unconstitutional? Personally, i would have thought it was much more unconstitutional to prohibit the selling of sex . Indeed, the criminalisation of two women working in a single premise seems utterly unconstitutional as the State hasn't got the right to determine the living arrangements of adults subject to the obvious health and safety building regulations etc .
    i'm curious on the matter....

If there are two girls in the one house, and one was a virgin, what would happen.?

Or one girl might not know what the other was doing, with all this house sharing, that goes on nowadays.

One might just have a boyfriend.

Never admit anything to police as it will be used against you

    Kate,
A very prominent supporter of this bill, when it was pointed out to her that it will make life hell on earth for sex workers, reponded it will act as a disincentive for women to enter the industry!
The main things about this law relevant to us are -
It's mainly about making sex workers suffer, because Radfems hate them for giving away sexual favours so cheaply and to men instead of them and religious loons want all sex save the missionary position between man and wife made a crime!
It's also about punishing working class male punters as in a society like ours, the middle classes and and upwards will get a free pass, but then again wealthy individuals in Ireland have literaly got away with murder!
And quite significantly, it's a fund raising measure/a new revenue stream for prominent TORLER groups when NGOs all over the country have seen money decrease due to the general public seeing a lot of them as scams and that austerity has not ended and that government funding is down! Now they will get more money while pretending to help down on their knees prostate sex worker before them (with Junior Cert English classes) which they will duely pump into CEO salaries and creating a few soft admin jobs for their buddies!
    Ride them on the beaches!

BTW Kate, I suggest that your goodself and some other workers here go together and speak to Clare Daly, Mick Wallace and Senator David Noriss and possibly Senator Mary Whyte, these all know the score on this one and will have more in their armoury after speaking to you all collectively to fight the next phase of struggle on this one, which no doubt will rear its extremely ugly head again sooon enough!

Oops just managed to erase my previous response before sending. I emailed with David Norris a while back with a template email given out to TD's (I think that is right) to show my objection to the new law proposal and unlike some others who actually thanked me for my support (dick heads) he took the time to reply and explain that he was convalescing after a period of time in hospital with cancer, but would do his best to fight our corner. He has been true to his word and has my utmost respect.

Sadly there really isn't a collective with sex workers. When you have it bashed into you that we are committing a crime by associating with each other (two sex workers chatting over a cup of tea during a raid), you tend to keep yourself to yourself as much as possible. It doesn't matter how good willed you are, when all is said and done you need to protect your own back and trust no one. I no longer trust the incentives of people that profess to be representing the sex worker either, but that is me personally and of course I'm only human and it is quite possible that I'm being paranoid, but where is that paranoia born from?

Ruhama and TORL know full well that they are dealing with faceless people that are under the thumb of stigma and moralising. Eyes are the window to the soul and without a face we remain souless in the eyes of the public and therefore we are not real and it's hard to feel compassion with something you don't know or understand.

Its not only escorts who can suffer the consequences if an escorts apartment is raided but the client as well, I actually was on the premises when it was raided by police and was told i would probably be called as a witness, name and address taken down, I didnt know the girl was sharing and I was dreading it for the next few months. Not good situation to be in.

The irony when I started this thread due to the fact that some clients on here seemed to think it was only 'them' that were going to suffer. Where here have I said that it is only sex workers that will/do suffer?
