Yes we do, we can be infected by mosquitoes and probably semen, and can transmit via both as well.

They are dormant in the egg and pupa stage of their life cycle and then emerge in the summer.

But then again the black death or plague wasn't carried by rats but the fleas they carried on their bodies.
Fleas and mosquitoes are blood sucking insects, so it's like sharing needles to a degree, although AIDS is not spread by insect vectors.

The experts are expressing concern that this virus might be mutating to enable it to be transmitted via mosquitoes found in temperate climates like ours. Then it hits the fan for sure.

They are so small they can't cross oceans, however they can be carried in cargo and aircraft.

Mosquitoes are a large family of insects and only a few (and only females) feed on blood.
In some species, the female needs to obtain nutrients from a blood meal before she can produce eggs, and in other species, she can produce more eggs after a blood meal.
Most species do not carry diseases and a bite usually at most, causes an irritating rash.

There are many diseases mosquitoes could carry in Ireland and yet they don’t.
For example, malaria is not in Ireland although in theory it could. It has been suggested it was here in the past and was the disease called The Ague. It is believed Oliver Cromwell contracted it here and later died of its complications.

As for Zika, the particular mosquito that carries it is not in Ireland although with climate change it could possibly survive here. And, as previously stated, Zika, and other diseases could mutate so that other mosquito species could carry it.
But at the moment, there are many other diseases that are more of a concern than Zika. A flu pandemic would be an example.

The biggest killer diseases in Ireland are heart attacks and strokes. Biggest killer of young people in Ireland are road traffic accidents.
    .
Nevertheless, deadliest animal family in the world to humans is the mosquito because it kills more humans than any other animal. However the threat of Zika either mosquito borne or person-to-person is extremely remote in Ireland and certainly no reason not to see South American escorts.
