Surgery prices

Hi guys,

I had a really bad fall in my holidays, i been told I absolutely need surgery as my knee tendon is broken, femur dislocated (luckily not broken). Without health insurance, how much would I have to pay in Ireland for something like this, any idea ? If I do the surgery here in Eastern Europe, I'd feel frustrated that I can't stay home (home is Ireland for me) plus I'm a bit afraid of the medical system here.

i'd say very expensive as you don't have VHI, book in as soon as you can though cause there would be a waiting list.

A friend of mine paid about €3000 for knee debridement in the Hermitage in Lucan.
This is just basically scrapping the cartilage, such as I understand it.

So I'd guess a bit more for your job.

I'd suggest asking them as paying for flights, hotels, taxis, etc. At the end of it will you really save?
Plus I imagine this is something that would require after care and advice.
It' s better to be able to pop back and ask an opinion if anything appears wrong.

My advice go to the Hermitage in Lucan and ask them.

Yes, I though I may be safer in Ireland, even if more expensive. Plus it something goes wrong ...

The sports clinic in Santry is best for these type of injuries,no idea of cost but it is where i would go myself if in your position.
Private hospitals are generally 1200-1500 per night,i have heard of people without medical insurance having the operation in this place or also in the Beacon Hospital and rather than stay in the hospital for more than 1 or 2 days they check into the Hotel close by and this may only cost 200 euro per night and then go to the hospital for treatment...

Hi Amy if you are within the EU there is a system whereby your doctor here can put you on the scheme I think its called European Health insurance card , there was some controversy over it recently in the UK if you goggle health care within the EU you will get a number of alternatives I am sure it is available here , designed for getting medical assistance whilst abroad all you need is to be an EU citizen It will allow you to have surgery and for it to be covered by the system. If not your doctor here can put you in as a public patient in your local hospital which may help with costs, I have been to The hermitage and such like they are rather expensive and offer no better care than the public system other then been seen quicker and given your injury you would/may get priority accordingly , I hope this helps your doctor or citizens information centres will guide you better.

If you took out travel insurance I suggest checking what that covers in relation to accidents.
If you are in an EU country as a citizen of the EU you should be covered for accident and treatment.
Seek advice from a holiday rep in the country you are in as they will know more about what is covered in the country you are in.

Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge by Pm or reply, I will properly reply to my PMs when I get access to a laptop.

I have arranged to go here in a privat hospital that apparently offers the best of everything. I'll be hospitalised tonight and I'll have my surgery tomorrow. I will fly back on the 09th of September, not fully recovered but at least putting the surgery stage back in the past. It's going to be hugely expensive for this country, if I need some metallic anchors about 2000 euro but that's an indication if I wanted this done in Ireland I would have looked at at least double that.

P.s. Thanks to the special someone who helped me very directly too, I'm not sure if she wants public disclosure so I'm trying to be discreet for the time being

Sorry to hear about your fall and hope you a speedy recovery.

I only know too well what you must be going through after I had a fall here 3 years ago, Ireland may have done a lot of good with the stop smoking ban and allowing same sex marriages but ffs they need to get a grips with a lot of issues which includes their health and safety. And the health system here when I walked into the hospital I was totally gobsmacked it was so bad, and I totally feel for anyone especially those who are elderly or young children who have no medical insurance .

I too am still recovering from my fall and still waiting to see a specialist which I hope to be able to over the next couple of months. But wish you well in your recovery honey.
