Default God help us if we ever go to war.

Seriously do the gov or people in power in this country ever even think before they say something? So the navy see 200 migrants drown after their boat capsizes. they found it a very traumatising experience? I mean ffs. What if they get attacked? Will they find that traumatising as well? Seriously if they think like this then they are better off back home. Your supposed to be able to deal with things youll expect and in this situation thats one of them, people drowning. If we ever go to war will they complain about being shot at?

    Westside.

It’s OK, because the Irish Republic is always neutral. If someone invades, NATO will probably do their fighting. Or even the British, who will not want a hostile force on their doorstep.
Ireland does not restrict its citizens from serving in foreign armies. So if an Irish citizen wants to fight a war, they can join the British, or United States armies, or the French Foreign Legion ect.

All joking aside, surprisingly a "real" war is often less traumatizing than the “civilian stuff”.

But I do understand your point. They are supposed to be military, fighting, men.

    Westside.
One of the strangest posts i read here even from you westside!

First if all in ireland we have a defence force not an army, there is a big difference.
Secondly, no matter how much training you do nothing could possibly prepare you for something like this. A certain sense of responsibility wrongly i add must play on these sailors as the ship turned over because they approached.
All they could do was see 700 people fall on top of each other, scramble and climb over each other as a survivel instinct kicked in and pull out who they could and watch as men women and children fought before going under and die before their eyes.

All by sailors who before now spent majority of their time in fishery protection.
I for one feel proud of what they are doing, sad for what they have to endure and pity for those who criticise based on some sort of view from war movies or something of what hard men they really should be

Tell that to the lads who came back from WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq, think they might disagree with you

    We live always underground
It's going to be so quiet in here tonight
A thousand islands in the sea
    It's a shame
