The perennial football versus soccer debate, how excruciatingly dull.

The fact is that Soccer is an English abbreviation of the term 'association football' and was in common use in Britain for donkeys years, until there was an anti American reaction against its use, similar to the anti Gaelic sentiments of a pathetic group of people in Dublin typified by the late journalist George Byrne.

It's not really the pathetic group in dublin though,I mean I agree call it soccer if you wish I am still puzzled how you can call the Irish gaa game or indeed the american game 'football' but sure as long as they are happy I guess what's the harm.

Never understood this love of soccer,
Most GAA teams are playing ugly Ulster football. Only 3 good teams to watch in the country are Dublin, Mayo and Kerry. Even at that they only play one or two games in the Championship you would get excited about.
I rarely watch hurling but Kilkenny are never entertaining. The Clare team 2 years ago was exciting but that's it. Overall a poor return each season.
Today's game was turgid. International friendlies are. I think to really appreciate soccer you have to have played it. To watch Messi since Christmas has been a privilege esp his game against Man City.
Messi at his best vs Sheflin or Gooch at their best. I'd watch Messi every time.

It was a good post until you mentioned Sheflin and Gooch in the same sentence as Messi.

Gaelic football and Australian rules football are catch and KICK games, American football and Rugby football (to a lesser extent) are catch and throw games so describing them as football is a bit of a stretch.
