Fair enough but I think most people want the rest of the idiots to grow up and stop ruining it for everyone. Its a tribal mentality among some that seems to get highlighted at certain times or over certain issues. Most of the time its grand and the majority get along.

I still hate it though.....and not just because of the idiots

I have met a few, very nice, educated Northerners but under the surface there is still a lot going on. The Moderate, Liberal parties do not get well supported by the majority you refer to.

No, and if they did I'd likely not get a second booking.

Absolutely. When out and about, I always get met with smiles, chit chat and some real cracking funny comments. Belfast has a real growing alternative crowd against the hardcore old opinions.

My experiences of Dublin has been miserable staff in the shops and security guards in front of some shops. Last time I was there I did not have a single person smile at me when out and about.

You see Belfast having grown up and heard of the troubles hence will be biased. I see it as a visitor.

If you look at recent crime indexes you will see that Belfast fares better and I personally have always felt safer working here.

Was only in Belfast couple of times ,13 years ago.
People seemed friendly, but I was only in the city centre and the train station.
First time I came out of the train station, I sat into a black taxi and was mildly nonplussed as the driver stood outside for maybe 15 minutes waiting (I had vaguely heard of sectarian divisions between taxi firms in the past).
Turns out (back then at least) the black taxis carried multiple passengers and the driver got 3 other passengers before moving on.
And the (shared) fare was very reasonable maybe £3 or so.

I don't think in big cities ,people are going to smile that much at people, out and about ,that they don't know.If miserable looking staff in shops, they may be Irish but an awful lot will be Eastern European too.And sometimes if you smile and engage with glum people they may respond and perk up a little.I remember Dublin circa 1985 and the only shop security I recall was at M&S, but then major shop lifting and heroin addiction kicked in.I also remember Limerick when the only uniformed security was in Easons. Now for years they are all over the place. They are sometimes needed I guess and many British multiples arrived here having security as their standard policy.
My one run in with store security was in central Toulon years ago, where after paying at a supermarket checkout , I was bundled into a room by two security guards, who were greatly taken aback to discover the bulge under my jacket was my dog eared , well worn copy of "Let's go, France 1994"
At their heart most cities are similar.
