I was appalled by the murders of Jill Meagher and Karen Buckley. And I can't imagine the agonies being endured by their loved ones.
But the tone, content and implications of this article, and the White Ribbon campaign it's reporting on, is nothing more than hate inducing, rabble rousing, and emotional blackmail.

"I remember waking up the morning that I found out what happened and it was just so heartbreaking. I cried for hours.

"It is a very similar case to Jill in a way but it is also very different in how individuals deal with this," he said.

He urged Karen's family to "take love where you can find it and take comfort in your family and friends".

"They have a very hard road ahead, as I know all too well."

Mr Meagher was speaking at the launch of a campaign against prostitution and sex trafficking in Dublin yesterday.

He told how a man who violently raped a prostitute justified it by saying: "I paid for her. I can do what I want with her."

"Two years later, that man raped and murdered my wife," he said.

While life after the death of his wife remains "very difficult", he said he has been helped greatly by being involved in campaigns to fight violence against women.

"It's the idea that we can all do our own bit to ensure that no other woman ever has to go through what Jill did," he said.

He condemned the attitude whereby men are tempted into using prostitutes under the illusion that it is an agreement of mutual consent. He said we need to end the lie that prostitution is about sexual freedom or liberation.

"It's not sexual liberation, it's exploitation...The only person we know making a free choice here is the buyer."

The murders are shocking and disturbing . But to say that I as an individual who punts is liable to comit a violent crime is really really scare mongering . It's a new departure .

Most men are not violent to women but a significant minority can and will be .This will happen regardless of whether it is an escort or even if the individual has ever visited an escorts. Apart from a few sociopaths the biggest factor in violence to women (aand indeed men) is usually overconsumption of alcohol.
By visiting escorts you are deemed to be outside (our) societies norms and being outside the norm can have consequences.
And it's not just women that will look askance at you, other men can derive a smug satisfaction from condemning u as well.
In a couple- centric society, even being a single male can at times be a little awkward in certain settings.

Its a blunt thing to say about Tom , considering what he suffered but he's also being very hypocritical .

Tom rightly criticised the Australian judiciary for the utter lack of respect they treated sex workers that Bayley raped , allowing Bayley to effectively carry out his abuses which resulted in Jill Meaghar's death.

But now Tom , himself , sees fit to ignore the wishes of sex workers in this country for full,recognised rights in favour of his own views on prostitution. And because, Tom is an eloquent ,respectful man who survived a terrible trauma , his views carry some weight.He is also an 'untouchable' because of what he suffered who undoubtedly is using his episode to try and do good.

Except that he completely invalidates the wishes and voices of sex workers ALL over the planet who strongly object to his automatic 'victimisation' accusation and more pertinent to Ireland the 98% of the sex workers in the QUB survey.

Should Tom Meaghar's voice be considered more important than the sex workers themselves ? Apparently so but that doesn't surprise any, does it ?

Both the husband of Jill Meagher and anti prostitution campaigners will feel entirely correct and justified and morally right in their stance.
Any collateral damage that may occur in the future due to "new laws" to either client or escorts will be largely unseen , swept beneath the carpet and uncared about.
Sex workers are being driven back to where they always were in the past, the shadows and dark, dismal, dingy alleyways.
And many/most in society are perfectly happy with this.

I just can't understand how Tom Meagher decides to stigmatise sex workers even further when the fact is that if the sex workers raped by Adrian Bayley had been taken seriously by the Australian police (as they would had they been 'ordinary' women) then Adrian Bayley would probably have been in prison instead of out on the streets in the first place. Does Mr Meagher not see the extreme irony in his now siding with the abolitionists? It's only when society removes the stigma from sex workers that they can freely report rape and other crimes to the police and thus decrease the chances of other women suffering the same. Shocking.

yes that makes me cross too. What was his excuse for murdering the man's wife. Did he pay for her too? I assume not, so why is he muddling up a murder who had no respect for women full stop with sex workers rights to work?
