Thread: Madness?

  1. Default Madness?

There was a time where a BMW was seen as a luxury that few could afford and there was a sense of exclusivity to it. Today it seems the place is full of them (especially those 520d models) and they have become as common on the road as pot holes. I don't know how people do it, especially in this the worst recession ever. I can only conclude that people get themselves into massive debt for them and I really wonder why. What is it about these things that makes people willing to sink into so much debt just so they can drive around in something that is now as common as the rain?? I'm quiet baffled by it actually, can't understand it.

    p.s. I don't own a car .... I couldn't even afford a bicycle

Well at least you have a low carbon foot print. Good for you.

I don't own a car, I don't have to, I live in London. However, it might be a sign that the economy is not as bad as it seems if consumers are buying (or confidently increasing levels of debt) for a ubiquitous status symbol.

Irrespective of the recession there have always been people with money, and those who could afford status symbol type cars. For a few years I definitely felt those with money were reluctant to be seen to spend, after all, we were all mean to be in this together!, the improving economy probably means they're happier to be seen to spend again, so those you see may or may not have saddled themselves with additional debt, they may just be spending money they already have.

I live in Dublin city myself and have definitely seen an improvement in the class of cars on the road, though if and when I need one my trusty little hatchback gets dusted off and does me just fine.

I used to but not any more. The days of me cleaning the end of me knob with €50 notes are long gone I'm afraid.
