Our sexual behaviour has a profound effect on how we live our lives: how society views you, whom you marry, whether you stay together, your health, whether you have children - all of these are shaped by sex.

We are right to be curious. And we are right to wonder whether what we are told about sex is really what the numbers say.

So these are the numbers - how do you measure up?

Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen in Knocked Up

The average energy expenditure by young people during sex is 85 Kcal - the equivalent of a couple of Jaffa Cakes.

The average heterosexual couple reports having sex three times a month between the ages of 16 and 44- this has decreased from five times a month over the last 20 years.
The proportion of men who claim to have successfully self-felated: 2.7 per cent (according to the Kinsey report).
A major 2010 study found that oral sex is practiced more by affluent people with higher academic qualifications - the opposite of anal sex.
Eighty per cent of those aged 25 to 35 say they have given or received oral sex in the last year.
The median time recorded for a man to ejaculate after vaginal penetration is nine minutes.
Around three quarters of men aged 25-35 and living with a partner reported masturbating in the previous four weeks.
Around five per cent of 25-34 year-old British men report having paid for sex in the last five years.
One in five 65-74 year-old British men believe that male same-sex relationships are “not wrong at all”.
The median age at which people first have sex in Britain is 16.
Figures taken from the British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) and Pew Research Center’s 2014 Global Attitudes survey.
Reported in Sex By Numbers: The Statistics of Sexual Behaviour by David Spiegelhalter, which is published by Profile Books and the Wellcome Collection and is available for £12.99 in paperback
