    Ah well!!!

I googled the quoted text Stephanie posted and it seems to be from here:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/29/wo...take.html?_r=0

So it looks like no one actually wears a scarf when visiting Saudi Kings, Americans or Germans (politicians) anyway.

I couldn't give a shit about some of these ridiculous traditions or expectations when foreigners travel to countries like these.

Muslim traditions should be for Muslim people end of story.
I might bow to some minor traditions in other countries ....for example how people greet other people such as in Japan or other Asian countries..........but I don't agree with traditions where for example women are expected to cover up hair, faces, body.

If she wants to do it fair enough...if she doesn't want to, fair play to her.
    She makes the choice,not them.
Travel to countries like what ?

    xx

It's not newsworthy that she wasn't covered up, you were reading the Daily Mail, not aiming for the ABC1 readership.

It was a CNN story I picked up on , thank you.

Interesting though , that it seems verbatim to your link. Hm. NY Times and CNN piggybacking ?

"As images of President Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama, with the new Saudi leader, King Salman, circulated online after their brief visit to Riyadh on Tuesday, commentators, observers watching from afar, seized on the fact that Mrs. Obama had not covered her hair during the audience with the new monarch."

"Reports that some Saudi bloggers had expressed anger at the first lady’s supposed show of defiance — in refusing to honor the Saudi custom that compels women in the conservative kingdom to wear headscarves or full-body cloaks — were followed by a chorus of online praise for Mrs. Obama. They were joined even by one of the president’s most avid critics, Senator Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican who perhaps hopes to succeed him."

I still don't get it though : if it's accepted protocol for US women (First Ladies , politicians) to not cover up , what's the

    hoopla about Mrs. Obama ?

Good Link , yours : worth looking at comments. Seems storm in a teacup.

In some Southeast Asian countries it is impolite to sit with your feet pointing at another person.

It is also very rude and bad luck for the child , for you to 'pet' their head.

It is appreciated by locals , for all to dress modestly.

When eating with your hands , eat only with your right hand.

    ...and some (many) more ...

As a visitor to a foreign land , is it really so much to ask to respect their culture ? xx

    Try turn it around xxx

These are the sorts of traditions I consider odd but (as I said earlier) I wouldn't mind bowing to, as I perceive them more as old wives tales that are considered of importance for locals.

Yes,it absolutely is too much to ask when the expectation is idiotic or discriminatory towards women.

Who the F@#k do they think they are telling women (Any women in my opinion, but for the purposes of this discussion foreign women)to cover their hair/don't show any skin, wear full length dresses to their ankles..............not to mention not letting them drive a car!

    Weeeell , if you don't like their rules , don't visit ?

Imagine someone coming to Ireland and going to mass in a bikini ?

Butchering a goat in the town square ?

Spitting on you ? Shi*ting in the street ? Grabbing your woman ?

Can't think of anything else x

Cultural differences -- would it be ok if they thought as you do ?

(Btw , of course I am absolutely pro woman and anti discrimination !! )

    Oh don't worry lol....I wouldn't visit in a fit.
    Too hot for me anyway

Its the going to mass part id disagree with...not the bikini.

They are all basic right or wrong issues any sane person would have issues with...nothing to do with belittling women or putting them down / treating them as inferior.
