Another possiblity is that she was in a similar environment to her Mother.
Pressure and stress does take its toll on people.

Someone recommended a book here a while back, which is ' They fuck you up' pretty dry and long read but, it's exactly about this.

We almost always follow the pattern which we see get from our parents, i kinda believe in this.

Well obviously I'm not thinking of drug using habits, if she had any, poor soul home she'll be able to recover....

    That, genuinely is very sad.............
Sometimes you're better off being born into a bread and butter (ie normal) family rather than what others perceive to be a charmed lifestyle with all the extra dangers and pressures associated with it.

If this is true about her brain damage, its indeed very sad to hear.

Pressure, stress is true honey plus so many find drugs a ways to escape from the sad crap life throws at us too. But better to deal with situation then take the easy way out, which in fact is not so easy to get out of once ones hooked.

The poem that inspired the book’s title, This Be The Verse, By Philip Larkin [1922–1985]

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

I think substance use/abuse can be learned from parents,
The substance can change, a kid thought his dad a dick on booze,
but he does marijuana etc etc
