I can see the value of the concept of the church and religion, it gives hope to some in difficult times, it allows some to rationalise and comprehend great tragedies because it was "Gods" will. This is all fine it there really was a divine one who only had our best interests at heart but the fact is it is an massive cult based of a fairy tale that so many other societies have bought into. The problem is the amount of power it has over so many venerable people, "with great power comes great responsibility" or as history has taught us comes great corruption.
The "church" has a lot to answer for with all the peadophiles that it has harboured and protected, the brain washing of people into handing over there money, being made feel gulity for have impure thoughts.

So yes in my opinion the "church" is evil as is "religion" in general. Look at all the wars that have gone on and look at todays war on terrorism, a total war of religions. Take away religion and what do we have, just a bunch of bad evil people with no excuse for being bad and evil.

Not to mention it's close ties with fascist regimes in the 1930's and 40's. Evil?? Well it certainly has a lot to answer for

Not inherently. Some of its followers and proponents have been evil, but that is true of any big group or organisation.

When I think of "evil", I think of people like ISIS.

No - as an organisation it isn't inherently evil but it has some pretty sick members both past and present.

Some clergy were raping children which is terrible, but management placed those rapists
in fresh parishes here and abroad-unforgivable.

The poor misguided , terrorised brainwashed and pathetic masses that do the 'dirty work' , or the leadership ?

Same applies in all religions / societies imo. : the ignorant and disadvantaged , the unwashed and illiterate many

doing the bidding of the conniving few , when there's a 'crusade' on .

: The ones easily manipulated do by active action , the 'respectable' middle just by simply keeping quiet and turning away .

Not to excuse the horrors bevisited on their victims , but when you have a gun to your head or a knife to your throat ,

when your own family is threatened by the worst fate , when you are forced to watch your young compatriots literally /

physically crucified for a negligible offence , when you bear witness to the horrors visited upon the 'unbelieving' populace ,

when your own life hangs by a thread to see if you 'perform your duties as 'prescribed' , I dare say most people would be

willing to perform whatever is required of them ; may that be murder , may that be rape , may that be torture or else.

What of the experiment of administering electric shock to a 'victim' at the behest of an authoritarian scientist ?

    I don't remember the statistics , 8 out of 10 ? 9 out of 10 ? lay people / average citizens were willing to deliver a

potentially fatal shock to a screaming victim (separated only by a thin partition) , only to just oblige the 'scientist' .

    (a US study).

Mob mentality sets in when there's more than a handful , even in the most developed societies.

There was a famous experiment done in the 70's -- some men were assigned to be prisoners , others assigned to be

prison guards . Three days in , the experiment had to be aborted , for causes of brutality. That was in SanFran -- I think.

    They all started as equals.

What of the child soldiers of Boko Haram ? : young children (boys as young as 8-9 yrs old) kidnapped , and trained to kill.

    And kill , they will.

    Are they evil ?
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.
