Good article, and reflects what most people on these boards would think.
However, as we know, Ian O'Doherty, a self-proclaimed atheist, and libertarian, does not represent the views of narrow-minded Ireland, North or South.

Very good article but then again all of us here are going to agree, he came across very logical but I thought he lost ground with the last comment, couldn't agree it's that simple..

Well, if this Government was really that concerned about the problem, they should tighten the borders to prevent what is, ultimately, an immigration and work visa problem.

Maybe not that simple but I think what he was saying, if they were tight on the border/visa,s that it will be harder to traffick people into the sex industry

Nice to see a member of the press seeing things from our point of view. Very good article its just a pity more aren't as outspoken as this gentleman. Normally I don't have time for journalists but well done to this one. More voices like his please

I've got to admit that it's a good, unbiased article & it's reassuring that a member of the general public, journalist or not, is putting forward a reasonable argument. I've always said that the proactive way to tackle trafficking, is to make every sex worker purchase a licence. Revenue for the government & a deterrent for the traffickers.

    Thumbs up

It is indeed refreshing to read that article. It puts a logical argument forward — unlike most of what has been ignorantly touted by the media. We need more such articles to balance to negative and untrue perception that has been pushed on the general public.

I was recently talking with a good friend. He has never met an escort of any sex worker (in a professional capacity) for that matter. He is happily married with kids and would be a very liberal level headed individual.

But for a liberal level headed individual his opinions on this subject had been converted to those that our legislators want him to believe.

When I told him he didn't know what he was talking about he got a tad annoyed — I continued and told him that I have seen about 20 Escorts in Ireland and not one of them conformed to the views that had been planted in his mind!

I told him that I knew a couple of ladies very well — I was not an expert on the industry but after telling him what I had experienced his opinion totally changed.

He was very annoyed that he had been swayed by lies. While he said he would never visit an escort himself he thought it was good that I, as a single guy could have the freedom to make my own decision and visit escorts it I wanted to.

I don't believe he is alone in his thinking — I am sure if more of the general public knew the "Real" story that they to would be in favour of allowing everyone their freedom to choose.
