Default No, Independent, that's not what the cops are looking for

They are looking for the murderer of a woman, you know, a human being, not a "thing"

I don't see in the article where the reporter refers to her as a "thing".

I'm assuming the issue is with them saying she's a prostitute as opposed to a woman......?
The above post, and many post on e-i, is for humour and myrth and therefore cannot be taken as intelligent or well grammatically/factually engineered.

While the journalist who wrote the piece may not have used the word ‘thing’ the tone is very clear, Belinda Pereira was nothing more than a prostitute, which makes her a lesser human. She is not referred to as a woman, or a young woman, just as a prostitute. It’s as blatant a piece of anti-sexworker bile as you’re likely to see.

There’s no evidence of a pimp so they trot out that other 'traditional' cause for someone working as a prostitute, they mention drugs in the third paragraph. They describe how much she was likely to earn to titillate the readers, ‘tis pity she’s a whore but sure wasn’t she asking for it screwing for money and all’.

Imagine the same thing happening to a young woman, a shop assistant or accountant perhaps, who was visiting Dublin as a tourist, or to see friends, would a newspaper describing her murder talk about whether drugs were involved or how much money she was earning?

Occasionally on the forum posters bemoan the fact that ladies obscure their faces or refuse to give any personal information. This article is just one example of the stigma that sex workers have to face; they will be judged and condemned forever for what they do.

And one final thing, while I applaud the Gardaí renewing their calls for information, I remember the tragic case at the time, I wonder if Ms Pereira hadn’t been working as a sex worker would such a length of time have passed without someone coming forward to speak to the Gardaí, has what she did for a living belittled her so much in the eyes of those who know who murdered her that they couldn’t be bothered to come forward,

after all, she was only a prostitute?

I think it only works if you go in wanting to find stuff that isnt there to be offended about.

he must be referring to the headline which includes 'prostitute' not 'woman'
but hes missing the point that headlines are made to catch attention and get people rreading the rest. if it just said woman the masses would think another woman dead ok, but when they read prostitute then regardless of their personal opinion of the profession they will probably read to see where it happened and when and think "oh I wonder where prostitutes work from now or how it happened? point being being it throws up more curiousity in their head than if some random woman died.

people are curious by nature cause if they werent we'd all be extinct now after we never got down out of the trees despite predators below waiting for an opportunity to eat us.

It was a very sad case.
I agree with you, the sub text of the article is quite clear and in line with the anti-sex worker agenda.
