Thread: How migrant sex workers are treated in Norway

  1. Default How migrant sex workers are treated in Norway

Some reading for you this afternoon, on how the famous Nordic Model has been implemented in practice. Or, The Law Of Unintended Consequences. Also, what gets measured, gets managed.

    Don't worry, it's in English.

With increased focus on human trafficking fighting prostitution has become a higher status issue in the police force. But the police do not go after prostitution as such; they go after prostitutes with an immigrant background.

“Do the police actually fight prostitution as such? They are very hard on some groups, while they tolerate others. This means that prostitution politics in practice are selective, they primarily affect immigrant women,” says sociologist Synnøve Jahnsen.

Nordic models(and by that I don't mean Victoria Silvstedt)will we end up driving with dipped headlights in summer sun, eating gravadlax from the smorgasbord while watching the Eurovision song contest and shouting Skol when we raise a glass of Guiness?

I was in Oslo back in 2007 and was taken aback by the sheer numbers of women operating on the street in as up front a fashion as possible. I think the majority of them were philipino. Not so many of them the next time I was in Oslo, 2010 but then it was bloody cold on that occasion.
