Thread: David Norris on Sex Work in the Seanad

  1. Default David Norris on Sex Work in the Seanad

David Norris on Sex Work, Ruhama and Prostitution in the Seanad today:

"I also want to take up this business of Ruhama, and Stop the Red Light (sic). It’s time this type of nonsense was really, honestly addressed….Despite the puppeteering going on by this middle class collection of ex-nuns and radical feminists…98% of the women for whom the voices are being articulated by the self-appointed group are opposed completely to it….the police are against it, by and large. Everybody realises that it’s going to be inoperable, ineffective and going to lead to serious risks to the lives and welfare of women and men involved in the sex business. So yes, prostitution is messy, it’s regrettable but it’s a fact of life."

Unfortunately David Norris is outside the main stream and - like sex workers themselves - is going to be ignored by all except those directly involved who see the plain truth and blunt honesty of what he says on the subject. It's a pity because it's people like him who have the real wisdom and are best suited to be legislators. And, I think, it's no coincidence that he himself was technically a criminal for most of his life simply because he's gay.
I wish that instead of trying to get rid of the Seanad they would make it a democratic body with genuine powers rather than a consolation prize for failed party lackeys.

The problem is that this rubbish is being addressed. It is just that reason, facts and logic are ignored.
It is like arguing with an Evangelical Christian that the earth is more than six thousand years old, or with a flat-earther that the world is round.
The evidence is there, it is just that they choose to ignore it.

David Norris is a formidable man and politician. He is certainly outside the mainstream but he may be hard to ignore.
He practically single-handedly, ended the anti-homosexuality law in 1988 after a fourteen-year campaign. In 1988, when Ireland was even less progressive than it is now.

Personally speaking, I've always felt David Norris' philosophy on sex work is both positive and supportive, but more importantly, he is realistic with regard to the sweedish model and the dangers it will inflict on both clients and sex workers if implemented.

That lady Senator (Coughlan) is no doubt a former teacher, it's the finger pointing that says it all. Doesn't want to hear the reality or truth, that yes some woman do CHOOSE this profession, just like a doctor or accountant. Again shows her bias about peoples work status. I bet she doesn't represent a working class area.............
