Massively important as first impressions count for everything. Same as a clients phone manner is the ultimate deal breaker for me if something doesn't sound right.
I am very polite on the phone because the person on the other end could be a potential client HOWEVER when the person on the other end of the phone shows himself to be a complete tool them my attitude also changes.
