Thread: Does the term "prostitute" offend you and if so why?

Default Does the term "prostitute" offend you and if so why?

Just wondered why an escort/courtesan/hooker would be offended being called a prostitute, after all that's what it is!

Prostitution is the business or practice of engaging in sexual relations in exchange for payment[1][2] or some other benefit. Prostitution is sometimes described as commercial sex.

A person who works in this field is called a prostitute, and is a kind of sex worker. Prostitution is one of the branches of the sex industry. The legal status of prostitution varies from country to country, from being permissible but unregulated, to an enforced or unenforced crime or to a regulated profession. Prostitution is sometimes also referred to as "the world's oldest profession".[3] Estimates place the annual revenue generated by prostitution worldwide to be over $100 billion.[4]

Some didn't for obvious reasons like the term while others couldn't give a monkey's so I think it was all agreed that they would be called Sex Workers.
    One big happy family....,,

    It is an offensive term.

What is euphemistically called the "N word" is also offensive. At one time the "N word" was not considered so offensive, and it even had a noble etymology coming from classical Latin, but no decent person would use the word today. I think the "P word" should also be seen in the same light. It is also judgemental and with too many negative connotations.

so what word do you use instead of the "N word"? Probably Black like 99% of the people I know. Which is funny as the word Negro is just the Spanish for balck and the "N Word" is derived from that. So as long as we stick to Black no one is offended.
So as you can see no matter which word you use it means the same. People get all taken up in certain words and try to get offended, but it's not the words that should cause offence it's the tone in which they are used.

The term 'prostitute' has a stigma too it of being forced or coerced into the industry. Also of being a street walking addict!

For me it is an very old term that doesn't need to be used, same as we don't call a chemist an apothecary anymore!
