Yes Brenda, experienced punter is correct that "retard" is not generally the best word to use because it wasn't so long ago people with learning disabilities were often called retards here.

I am sure you didn't mean any offence, but I can understand how some people could take offence, so it is best to avoid the term.

It might be better to say gobshite, dick head etc as these were never terms used to describe people with learning difficulties.

All this said, this is all a bit of a minefield I feel, and so long as Brenda didn't mean offence (which I don't think she did) I don't personally take offence.

We also have to remember we can't all be 100% politically correct all of the time
