    Thumbs down Clap Clinic

Eastenders just really pissed me off!!!!!

Ian and Jane are arguing. Apparently Jane discovered that Ian had slept with a prostitute 2 days before they slept together, so she had to go to the clap clinic and get checked out and her being middle aged and all!!!

Where the fuck do they get the idea that all prostitutes must be riddled, therefore she HAD to go to the clinic to get checked out?

Are we assume that he went bareback with this prostitute?

Makes me so angry that they write this into the script, like it is a normal reaction to finding out someone has paid to see a Sex Worker. The stigma really isn't going anywhere is it.

    Sigh!

    i quite agree..

it's much the same, isn't it, as the general perception amongst the public and poiticians that the majority of sex workers
are trafficked, the shite beaten out of them..etc etc...hence the Bill we see here today...

Do you have regular health screenings that include STI checks? I'll assume the answer to that is a big yes. Do you hope your clients do too? Again I'll answer for you and guess yes.

So why is it so strange that you think a partner of a punter would go and get checked too if she was to find out. Whether it's an escort, streetwalker or just a random one night stand, she should get checked.

The fact is that this is our living, so we can't afford to be getting STI's. Statistically we are far less likely to be passing anything on than a one night stand or an affair where often condoms are not used. I doubt very much they would have had the same conversation if he had been out and had a one night stand. Of course they would have rowed, but she wouldn't have emphasised the need to get checked out. In fact I can not remember ever hearing anyone talking about STI tests in a soap when one party has had sex away from the relationship, it's always been about the infidelity itself.

So... sure she may get checked out, but it is peculiar to the fact he went with a sex worker that it is drawn attention to in this case and THAT pisses me off. He's had numerous affairs and one night stands before and no one ever mentioned it before.

You're right Kate, if it hadn't been with a sex worker then I'm sure no mention whatsoever would have been made of 'getting checked'. It's a sad reflection of society.

I think the most disturbing thing is that people actually watch Eastenders

You don't need to have unprotected sex (oral or otherwise) to contract gonorrhea. I should know - I was left with the "running rage" myself after seeing an escort here in Galway in 2009.

While I agree with your assertion that escorts are likely to be more aware of their sexual health than other women, the fact is that escorts have sex with more men than even the most promiscuous party girl. Its understandable that the soap character would expect her love rat partner to get a checkup after he had sex with an escort.

At the end of a day I like to have something on that doesn't require much thinking and reminds me of what I'm not missing out on back in England. It's what keeps me here. Also it's good research for one of the courses I'm doing, as it concentrates on social relationships. That's my excuse for watching Hollyoaks, Coro and Emmerdale too

Or anyone he had sex without out of a relationship. I know someone who got chlamydia within a relationship where neither of them cheated. It was in his system from before they met and he passed it on to her without knowing he had it. This is something that has no real symptoms and can be dormant.

All I'm saying is that the law of averages does not dictate that more STI's come from Sex workers and I think actually at the moment it is middle aged people that are getting them the most, with their 'mid life crisis' sexual encounters. So in a way, it's a double wammy, as she is a prime example of the age group that is now having to frequent GUM clinics, because of the indiscriminate unprotected sex going on.

They were saying on the radio this morn that chlamydia is back up to Celtic Tiger levels in Ireland- presume this relates mostly to young people having unprotected sex but we should be wary !
