    Folks,

Marshall McLuhan, who coined the phrase in the title, said "a light bulb creates an environment by its mere presence" and is a perfect example of how a few words can conjure up the worse images.

I have been reading what both sides have to say about the current debate in Ireland regarding escorting and the "Turn off the Red Light" campaign is a brilliant move because it conveys images of people operating in a seedy area of the city where sexual activity takes place in a run down flat with a mattress on the floor, a 15 watt bulb providing the only lighting and women that look dishevelled. Or they will imagine sexual activity taking place in the bushes, in a car, an alleyway, etc and doing so under the supervision of a tattooed and scary looking pimp who comes by every couple hours to collect the earnings from terrified and vunerable women.

While the above images do exist, it is not every escort's situation. Many women have made the decision to become escorts for any number of reasons. It might be a very attractive university student who has stunning looks and decides she can earn a very good income while pursuing academic studies or a very sexy 40 something lady whose husband has left her after a long marriage where she was a homemaker and has no skills in the current labour market and sees a demand for milfs. The list goes on. However, this is not what people think when they hear the term "escort". Many escorts live comfortable lives just like anyone else with the exception that they provide sexual services for a fee and most often in the comfort of a bedroom; either at a incall location that the escort has or the client's home or hotel.

The fightback should not be a "Turn off the Blue Light" campaign because people will not relate to it. They just won't. What they will relate to is when you speak of the State interfering in the private lives of individuals; hence the focus should be on whether the State has any business in what goes on between consenting adults in their bedrooms.

What will irk people is when you start talking about legislation that determines what sexual activity is legal or not legal in the privacy of their bedrooms or any room in their homes. It was not too long ago that many countries had sodomy laws. The common people do not envision that escorts operate from the confines of nicely decorated and warm apartments with fresh sheets and towels, etc. It is the pictures and videos of horrific living conditions that are shown on during news coverage of women being rescued from forced prostitution. These are the images that people retain in their memory and whenever they hear the term "escort"; it is how they perceive that person's environment to be.

The lightbulb is a very powerful symbol. Without light, you are in darkness. The "red light" is representative of prostitution in some seedy neighbourhood. In fact, most people will have nothing nice to say when they hear the term "red light district".

Therefore, the argument has to be about whether the State has any business in what goes on in your bedrooms. Does it have any business legislating parameters dealing with sexual affairs between consenting adults? The danger with the State being involved in this area is that it leaves the door open to further legislation that goes beyond dealing with escorting.

Just my thoughts. Look forward to your thoughts and comments.

    Regards.

The State have no business what's going on in the bedrooms of adults. Whether it's a couple inlove having fun or escort providing companionship. It's the privacy of adults having fun behind closed doors.

Unfortunately Ashley, thats exactly what they are trying to do. I think the only way to fight this anti-escorting legislation - will be from the angle of preservation of freedom and privacy of consenting adults.

unfortunately, it will be your sad nosey neighbours with nothing better to do than look out the door all day, and report you. then one day there'll be a knock on the door, and the client is with you.
Thank you all the ladies I had pleasure of meeting. Forever grateful for the memories

Hi Denise. Check out this website - 'Turn off the Red light' Turn Off The Red Light.ie | End Prostitution and Sex Trafficking in Ireland

These are the people who want to destroy escorting in Ireland. They are a very organised group of people and have already got backing from the Labour party who are likely to be in the next government.

They are proposing legislation that is called the 'Swedish Model' - where an escort is free to advertise and work but clients are prosecuted for the intention of buying sexual services.

As you state, no escort is going to simply tell on clients as this would be the end of her business. However, the strength of this legislation is that it isn't aimed at geting convictions. Humiliating suspected clients is one of it's aims. A man doesn't have to be caught in the sexual act to be prosecuted. Evidence of phone calls to a known escort or use of escorting websites and being found outside an escorts apartment may all be used. (I think. I'll admit I'm no legal expert).

Again gaining a conviction isn't important to these people - they aim to humiliate and embarass clients in public and in front of their families.

No one knows if this legislation will actually be passed in Ireland. Even if its passed it isn't clear how the garda will actually act. It will be a sad day for me if its passed but i still live in hope that the new government will have too many real problems to focus on this nonsense.

Like most things in Ireland, they'll only do something if there is money in it for them.

morpheus i`m no legal expert either far from it....but the police (garda as called in irland)should have a warent to enter the privacy of your own home and that with a good motive i mean what does democracy and freedom even meen if not?i mean day could enter anywhere just because they feel like it....i dont think its like that!and no way can they have any evidence what so ever...it is imposible.and no point in sanding undercover garda as i`m not prosecuted anyway....and i can let anyone in my house who i feel like.the thing is would be more safer to work for escorts...as the scamers and fake gardas would not act so breavely anymore.becasue surely i would run to garda report them.my opinion...

I'm sure there will always be ways around a new law. But if it frightens a lot of clients away, the best escorts will leave and the business will never be as good again as it is now.

Let's see what the detail of any proposed legislation is and then attack it relentlessly.

We've had lots of good contributions on these pages since we started making noise about it.

When the time is right, I think some of us might need to meet and put a proper plan together.

I agree with you there Bruno.

Lets see the detail when its proposed in govenrment. Labour have promised to bring it in - so I think that they will invevitably propose something. However, my hope is that the government will be too busy with other matters. On the other hand - you can be sure that other crowd "Turn off the red light" will not rest until they have their motion passed.

I think we should act when the time is right and not bring attention to the industry beforehand. The time will be right when its being discussed in Government and the media again.
