I would be very surprised if this does not go forward for a full hearing given the judgement in the Bedford case in Canada. The establishment case appears to be resting heavily on the objective of choking off demand to prevent trafficking.
They seem to suggest that even if consensual non coercive prostitution(imo the vast majority is non forced on the Island of Ireland) is commonplace the fact that even a small number of "slaves" are prevented as a result of the new laws it is
a cause for celebration. This is both disproportionate in its effect on the safety and right to earn an income of the majority of sex workers but it is also blinkered in it's failure to realise that these laws are more likely to increase rather than decrease trafficking. Why because if non-coerced workers are forced out of the industry criminal elements will step in to fill the void operating deep underground mainly with forced labour.

Just look how well they done by criminalising drugs, or prohibition in the states back in the day.

Prohibition does not work in almost all situations. However, this legislation although abolitionist in intent is primarily demand focused. It's like allowing pushers sell drugs but going after the guys buying the junk hard. The idea is that over a period of time you choke off the demand so there is no reason to have a supply to meet it. It is an idea borne out of a marriage of convenience between social conservatives (many Irish politicians fall into this category) and radical feminists using the pretext of stopping the supposed trafficking and exploitation of vulnerable women. It of course demonstrates profound ignorance of the sex industry as multi-variable and sophisticated and that sex work for many represents informed individual choices worthy of respect. The devious propaganda of the alliance supporting the Nordic approach has enabled them gain the upper-hand as they appear to have convinced a large number of legislators in quite a few countries now that it is a true and categorical fact that all prostitution is exploitation and is indicative of female sexual subjugation. Fortunately there are some beacons of light such as the 2003 Prostitution Reform Act in New Zealand and the Canadian Supreme Court judgement in the Bedford case signals at least a recognition of the health and human rights approach to sex work which is common among groups opposed to the Nordic model. These groups often termed "sex radicals" recognise complex economic, socio-political and cultural parameters that inform decisions surrounding sex work and strive to mitigate the conditions that make sex work dangerous and uncomfortable for many. Hopefully Laura will get the opportunity to put this case forward in the near future.

The Belfast High Court has just granted leave for a judicial review of the Human Trafficking Act on all grounds. Hearing dates to follow. So this is a win in the first battle in the war, but of course there will likely be many more to come.

When a law is insane at a level where it puts peoples lives at risk or where it impacts on fundamental freedoms such as the right to privacy, the right to free association and the right of 2 unrelated consenting adults to have sex with each other in private and The Northern Ireland version of The Nordick Model does all these things, then it has to be challenged!
