Thread: Scottish Independance - the Irish viewpoint??

  1. Default Scottish Independance - the Irish viewpoint??

With the Scottish referendum for independence coming up, what are some of the Irish opinions on this issue? Will it be a good thing or not for Scotland and the UK? Care to share your viewpoint

There is a fear it will lead to increased competition in terms of attracting foreign investment here! Scotland and Ireland are quite similar in many respects! Indeed between Ulster Irish and Scots Gaelic, there is apparently just a 350 word difference making them probably the 2 closest languages in the world!
There is supposed to be a 15,000 strong orangeman march in Edinburgh in support of The Union, today (AFAIK) and that's wonderful to see as not alone will it gain 1 NO vote, but it will convert any undecided Catholic voter into a YES!
I support Independence, but it ain't goin to happen this time and there is a 7 year bar on the question being revisited!
A few years ago I was in a fast food restaurant on Parnell Street and happened to sit beside 2 elderly Quebecois couples! 3 of them did not speak any Anglais and the one who did wasn't even A2 fluent and yet they appeared to support The Canadian Federation! It's probably the case that support for a Quebec Libre has dropped over time! Indeed the French speaking minority in Whinniepeg lives in fear, Quebec will go independent!
It's probably the case that support for a United Ireland among Northern Catholics will decrease by even more than their current 25% support level for the Union!
Maybe if Scotland doesn't go now, it never will!
    Ride them on the beaches!

The people in Cork say that Cork is the real capital of Ireland.

What if Cork looks for independence?

It simply will not happen, too much uncertainty and scaremongering and they will not vote for Independence.

Its not really an issue at all from what I can see. Nobody is talking about it much here.

Seriously hot topic! Irish politicians have decided to stay out of it. Why risk offending either Westminster or Edinburgh! There is no gain in it. An independent Scotland could destabilize the Northern situation hugely and also pose significant risks and competition to our inward investment strategy.

At the same time there is a visceral and inherent sympathy in Ireland generally for the whole cause of Scottish independence dating back to the Jacobite tradition here.

Politicians and general resident in Ireland alike are, if they think about it, somewhat conflicted.

Ironically (which is not spoken of at all in the UK) it appears that the vast majority of Catholics in Scotland are voting no as SNP (advocating a yes vote obviously!) is seen as a bastion of Presbyterianism hegemony. In the North however the Presbyterian / general protestant community are adamantly opposed to Scottish independence while many Catholics see either independence or greater autonomy for Scotland as a guide to where the North may go. Figure that one out!

    Enda.

I dont think it will have much implications for us in the Republic. Northern Ireland could be different though.

I think it is a bad thing for all concerned. It is one thing to sing Flower of Scotland, and all that, but the practical implications, especially the financial, would not be good for Scotland, or what remained of the United Kingdom.

There is also concern in Europe that if Scotland were to become independent it would encourage others (Catalonia, for example) to follow suit . Even, if as it is likely, there is a NO vote, it will encourage other to say that voting did no harm and for a lot of other regions to try to do the same.

A positive outcome(or is it) is that Scotland has been promised more devolution of powers. As a result, Northern Ireland and Wales will be in a position do claim they are entitled to the same.

Indeed. Complicated. And could open whole can of worms with implications that cannot be foreseen.
I think that is why it will be a NO vote.
