Thread: Meanwhile in Northern Ireland...

  1. Default Meanwhile in Northern Ireland...

    ...the other shoe has dropped.

After weeks of intransigence by the DUP, today a temporary budget was agreed. It was voted through by the DUP and Sinn Feinn.

I'm sure tomorrow's deadline for a GBP100m bridging loan concentrated their minds.

But a cynic might wonder whether the DUP's sudden agreement to things they found unacceptable earlier this week was in any way related to SF's voting for Morrow's Clause 6 the other day. Surely not

Strange as it might appear, not impossible. The British Government, in the past, used the threat that they would force a bill allowing gay marriage in Northern Ireland through if the DUP did not come around to their way of thinking.
Pretty stupid to accede to that threat, given it is only a matter of time until Europe forces them to accept gay marriage.
But image and votes are all important. Morrow's posing and picture opportunities with his bill give him credence with the crazies and fundamentalists.

Yes, and isn't an election due up there next year?
