I've read Ulysses several times. The key is to ignore everyone else and read it like a normal book. Don't try to analyse every word. Sure, you'll miss some things, but you'll get most of it. I did give up on Finnegan's Wake after a few pages, though. Maybe I'll make another attempt some time.
