Irish Times Article today Monday 30th August

Surprised there has been no thread yet on the article in today's Irish times.

I have yet to see any evidence of a brothel or forced prostitution so could someone point out to me what I am missing.

In fact I visited one of the girls that was quoted in the article only last week and can assure anyone that she is more than a willing participant.

I think the worst thing about this article is the clear targetting and naming of an individual escort on E-I, who gave no permission to be named or to have these slanderous accusations made against her. Normally the tabloids don't do this, they just go ahead with their cock and bull story and most people know it's ridiculous but like to read it anyway because it's fun to see what they say. But even in the most sensational tabloid stories, they never make wild extrapolations and wild speculation about what such and such "really" meant, not like that for ordinary sentences. Any fool can see how retarded that is, but these people are beneath fools.

Kathy Sheridan probably thought that Rebeka isn't a fluent English speaker and probably won't take her to court, she probably thought she is a soft touch. It's times like this that E-I would do really well if they had a legal team to help them, lawyers specialized in escort law who have no hangups aout any of it. We've heard things about this before but where are they?

Kelly, if prostitution was legal and a girl could work independently but was wrongly alleged to be working under a pimp then you might have an argument for slander. Given the current law that's not a case I would be taking on as to make it you would have to admit an illegal act.

It is completely legal to work as a independent escort, fiatpunter. The grey area here is that the name that is being slandered is a fictional one, therefore it would not stand in a court.

But independent prostitution is legal here, have a look at this article:

There are not legal here most things that are related the prostitution act itself: advertising in Ireland, soliciting, getting accommodation for such purpose etc ...

It is a bit of a clever legal loop but technically, if an escort doesn't advertise anywhere in Ireland (E-I is not in Ireland), owns her place of work, work by herself and for herself, doesn't speak about money on the phone etc... she has nothing to fear from authorities.

The weakest point for escorts here is the accommodation part, if you have to rent or use hotels.

Thanks SD, you are precise as usual. Slightly off topic, but a friend and I were discussing Jersey, where it is illegal to be an escort. She was asking if we could charge more because of this- bless her. I pointed out that nine out of ten cats already think its illegal everywhere. I am seriously considering having it tattooed on my backside.

Excellent idea about the tattoo while working ! Doing the doggie position in this case will bring not only pleasure to the client, it will also bring legal knowledge :)

Going in holidays might be an issue though if you don't like hundreds of men starring at you while sun bathing.

That is arguable that it is not fictional at all. I know someone who succesfully sued a paper where the article didn't name him but clearly identified him. Rebeka isn't fictional, no more than Bono is though neither is their real name.

Probably the case, but as that wouldn't be the issue I doubt it is defensible. Rebeka isn't fictional no, but then surely Fiatpunter isn't, either?

It doesn't matter if the names aren't the real names. Bono is a good example. Someone can't just write an article about Bono, pull out things he's said and quote them, and write a load of crap about them.

Even if something was completely fictional, like the characters of 24, that doesn't mean they can say what they like about them.

This is why people need to sign release forms for things like Naked Camera and why people's faces are often blurred. Only if a person is considered "public" is it possible to do such a thing.

I think the important thing is that E-I should find lawyers who will know the law and are willing to support escorts. I think this would help escorts feel safer with E-I and it would also protect prostitution here more. There were some rumblings about this before (not my idea), and I can't see why it wasn't followed through with. Bad publicity is one thing, but shutting down girls and prosecuting them they must surely want competent legal representation.

Well, I would agree with that. As it doesn't seem to be happening though, I have an excellent solicitor who is always happy to offer confidential advice. If any lady needs his number, feel free to point her in my direction.
