The Russian, 28, tested positive for meldonium, a substance she has been taking since 2006 for health issues.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) analysed the sample and returned a positive for meldonium, leading to the Russian being charged on 2 March.
"It is very important for you to understand that for 10 years this medicine was not on Wada's banned list and I had been legally taking that medicine for the past 10 years," said Sharapova.
I really want to believe her, but Lance Armstrong has tarnished every sports person, is she guilty or not?

This substance has only recently being on the banned list even though its performance enhancing, maybe because it's difficult to develop a reliable test for it.
Doping in sport is widespread! As this is an anomonous forum, it's safe for me to talk.
I could list many Irish examples, but the latest was Jamie Heaslip and his high "naturally occurring" testosterone, so if it isn't synthetic it's okay??, but yet I can get bio identical testosterone from a German laboratory and bring my levels up but not too high and it okay!
There are new performance enhancing peptides every month...it takes years to develop a reliable test for each one.
Sorry to say, but drugs will always be present in sport... Sad! -

Out for dinner one night with a Athletic coach when the drugs issue came up and he told me about a conversation he had with Jerry Kieran.
After the 84 marathon olympic,s race all the runners had a talk about what they were on after the race
Jerry told them he was doing nothing at which the other athlete,s did not believe him
Jerry came 9th in that race, he was told that you do not come in the top 12 without doing something
And we all know who came second there. -

07-03-16, 23:39Meursaulti would respectfully disagree. armstrong had a genius of doctor in michelle ferrari behind him. ferrari knew two things: How to give armstrong a great advantage through blood doping and secondly how to hide the fact that he was doping. armstrong then had so much power and money that he could dictate things. the whole system was corrupt. the irish guy who was head of the cycling corporation basically turned a blind eye. marco pantani who was doping as well was physiology wise better suited to the mountains, yet armstrong was able to match him on mount ventoux. the only difference is pantani got found out early, armstrong didnt.Quote:

well the fact that the WADA only decided to ban it from the 1st of Jan this year, her story could yet prove true ,she said she never opened the link in the email they sent in December. I
Surely if it was performance enhancing she would be hammering Serena Williams year after year and be no 1 in the rankings , she has only won a handful of open titles, 6 i think and i assume she has been tested many times since she turned pro ,so it could be an honest mistake -

I'd seen the headline yesterday about it.
It's a strange twist, the whole issue of the substance she was 'caught' taking not being on the banned list until just last year...
I've also got a mate who was a personal trainer and physio therapist, and he had a few stories which echo much of what's been said by others about the widespread use of performance enhancers at professional and Olympic-level sports, including the never-ending chase for detecting the latest 'cocktails', which are almost always years ahead of what they currently test for. He mentioned having heard from others that the top-performing athletes in their respective sports at the university or junior championships levels will all hit a point in their careers where they are at their 'peak' of their presumably 'natural', drug-free performance levels, and face the inevitable choice:
Either 'retire' as an amateur athlete after they finish university or juniors-level competition, or get on a 'programme'... He mentioned how many of them, if they decide to go on the dope, end up smashing their own personal bests at whatever their sport or event is, something which they probably could never have attained without it. -

The drug has been on a watch list for a year and on the banned list since january 1st. hardly that big a deal compared to others who have been caught. Surely if these reports are accurate, she should only be getting a slap on the wrist. Or if she opts for a good old fashioned spanking, then maybe I could ehm, lend a hand.:rolleyes:

It's a heart drug called meldonium which is used by healthy athletes to increase their ability to train.
Seems WADA was tipped off about it last year.
It is not even approved as a medicine in the us.

Probably one of hundreds that WADA have just found out about. No doubt athletes are using simular drugs that WADA knows nothing about .
