Random thread is random.
It's mainly a genetic disorder, but can also be a side effect of testosterone / steroid use. Body builders etc sometimes get a raised level of red blood cells and therefore need to donate blood on a regular basis. Gives a "high colouring" complexion also. Easily diagnosed on a routine blood test.
If you suffer from any of these 2 then you might have the disorder
Hemochromatosis Complications
If hemochromatosis isn't found and treated early, iron builds up in your body and can lead to:
Liver disease, including an enlarged liver, liver failure, liver cancer, or cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
Heart problems, including arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) and heart failure
Diabetes, especially in people who have a family history of diabetes
Joint damage and pain, including arthritis
Reproductive organ failure, such as erectile dysfunction (impotence), shrinkage of the testicles, and loss of sex drive in men, and absence of the menstrual cycle and early menopause in women
Changes in skin color that make the skin look gray or bronze
Underactive pituitary and thyroid glands
Damage to the adrenal glands
Well done Willie on highlighting the condition. Some body very close to me has the condition. Can impair a person's life at times.
Have to get blood taken off. There is an organisation specifically for those with the condition. They held their latest meeting
last Saturday.
Hey willie just to let you know i am also from the west and have that condition as well i had to get 35 pints of blood of me in one year
it is a celtic gene and runs in family's
it only diagnosed ten years ago
Hang in there willie fair play to u for talking about it
I was over a thousand ferritin, like yourself I give only once every three months now
joints and knees still very stiff bit I be grand
pity they throw away the blood after taking
could be used for anaemics u would imagine
Well how are you getting on you auld rust bucket :lmao:
An blood test can only tell you your iron levels are too high
but you need to do a DNA test to confirm if you have HH since there could be a load of different reasons why your iron levels are too high.
My docs tell me to eat healthy and don,t cut out the food that are high in iron, as he said [B]]We,ll look after the Iron for You [B]
Green tea is good for stopping Iron absorption since it,s high in tannis
Thats a terrible shame that there will be no cure:mad:
She knows all about the foods she can and cannot eat. She only drinks tea now. Sometimes she feels really tired after a busy
day. Are you member of the Irish Hemochromatosis Society? She finds them very good.
sorry you have that crap willie
i think you are on top of it now tho
i never heard of it until now
god yea
you remember the other day
i was telling you i had meningtis as a child
but back then, noboby heard of it
so if it was'nt for that docter
i would'nt be here
i am sure by now you know all about it
diet must play a huge facter tho
not just popping pills
Hey willie
did u say coffee is bad for the condition and green tea good
I was told to stop eating green veg and red meat
I know myself when I need to give blood pains in joints been wrecked tired poor concentration
as u say once u give the blood u feel u could run a marathon
I feel my father rip died from it as he had the same complaints I had but it was not diagnosed at that stage
I must look out for a support group
thanks willie for raising this post
It is Hereditary and both of parents have to carry the gen for you to get it, I,m the only one to have it.
If your parents are carriers then you have a 25% chance of being HH.
The blood test is only an indicator, a genetic test is the only way to be sure.
Now if your iron levels are normal then you do not need a genetic test
No coffee is ok but tea,esp green tea is better, they say you should cut out alcohol :(
Greens are fine even if they have iron since you don,t absorb iron from greens as easy as red meat.
You still need red meat in your diet so maybe 2 helpings a week and have tea with and after your meal.
And don,t drink citric drink as they high in vit c which helps u absorb iron
If your father died over 20 years ago yes it,s quiet possible from HH as they knew nothing then about it.
Give u the drink ah now sure i might as well go into a monastery and live life of a hermit if i can't have my pint lol
i get my venesection done in gps and he charges 97 euro to do it
I am in vhi so Iit covered but it some money
Well i moved from Guinness to Heineken so that is my sacrifice lol
