LibertÉ, ÉgalitÉ, fraternitÉ.
We have amended our constitution to cater for <3% of the population. A sad day. Although for once I am on a losing side it is a source of great consolation to know I was on the right side.
It's good to see we're not as closed minded and backward as we once where:) Well on some subjects anyway
The wishes of 30% of the country have been blatantly ignored to cater for a tiny minority. Democracy gone mad. Vegetarians constitute a similar sized minority. Should we hold a referendum outlawing meat consumption to cater for them?
A democratic state caters ,in as much as it can ,for its minorities.
In a true democracy freedom of religion or freedom to vote for a political party is taken as a given. Now freedom to marry whomsoever you wish has been added to these.
And by doing so the majority heterosexual population will not be threatened in any way.
As regards children (sometimes mentioned with the definition of the family by the "no campaign) the laws on child welfare are already there only to be implemented properly and adoption laws are quite stringent for anyone of any persuasion.
Today's amendment doesn't change these things in any way.
Don't think many will be getting married in Leitrim or Roscommon anytime soon
The wankers at Stormont could do with holding referendums at it's clear they haven't a clue about what the people here want.
Well done to the southern people for exercising their democratic right to allow a minority to be more equal with the rest of society. Sad state of affairs that my wee area is the only area in the British Isles not to allow everybody who is in love to marry if they want.
People had the right to vote no and I respect their reasons for doing so but tbh I don't see how two people of the same sex getting married affects me in such a way that I want to deny them something that would make them happy.
Delighted to see such a clear majority for "yes" and so widespread across the country too.
Only sorry that I was denied the chance to add my personal Yes vote
So you would rather deny someone the same rights as you, even though, it costs you nothing , does not hurt you in any way and does nothing to change the meaning or sanctity of marriage in any way, and also does not force any church to marry same sex couples if they do not wish to. That , by any definition is a very selfish attitude. Thank goodness , for the sake of equality, you lost.:p
SSM Yes 62% , Presidential age No 73%.
Does anyone else think it's weird how we voted strongly to end discrimination in one referendum but voted strongly to keep discrimination in the other?
Schizophrenic voters are we?
Well said Naughty. Gay people have as much right to feel as miserable and wretched as the married heterosexuals on here obviously do. Divorce lawyers aside obviously. :D
And now that we're all equal n' shit ... what now? Have we solved world hunger? Have the children in Africa stopped dying? No. No they haven't, you fucking lame assholes.
Go fucking die.
It's great and historical moment alright, however I have mixed feelings, not that I'm against equality at all, but I suppose for many abortion question is equally important.
It's still illegal even in case of rape...
Well there might be a referendum on this?! Would be great to see such a strong lobby there as well....
