Excellent article Labelle. I'm not sure what your concerns are, but they have obviously gone over my head. Forgive me if I've interpreted your last line there?

I note the author Paul Ryan is a board member of SWAI, and I know of your views of the organisation.

However, they are putting across the points we've all made here - namely that woman have as much a right to say 'yes', and they do to say 'no'.

Also he points put the holes in the Swedish model and how it further endangers escorts and in many cases takes away their livelihood.

I like this line form the article:

A compassionate society should care less about the optics of removing sex workers and more about the consequences of such a decision to effectively remove the livelihood of a section of the population; however you or I may view that activity from our relatively privileged positions

Any article that points out the hypocrisy and failing of crminalization is a positive in my book.

I love his summary the best:

Let’s actually talk to sex workers who have been excluded from this discussion, who are more than just victims to be rescued or sinners to be saved. Let’s look at other jurisdictions like Britain, Australia and New Zealand which provide alternative policy responses. Let’s have the broadest discussion possible, driven less by salacious tabloid headlines and religious ideology and more by the health and safety of sex workers and the wider community. These men and women deserve no less.

Victims to be rescued or sinners to be saved!!! Well that just about sums up how "certain organisations" view sex workers!!!

Sorry Morpheus... I didn't mean Paul Ryan, it's a good article...I mean in the comments...the Ruhamites were out in force, but they REALLY crossed the line, here is a sample:

***
All this article has to offer are well written misconpections. Groups lobbying for the Swedish model in Ireland, work daily with women in prostitution and have formed an opinion based on hundreds (over the years probably thousands) of cases involving women in prostitution. Hence, the voice of the women concerned is well represented. This voice is very clear – in Ireland and elsewhere – they want out!
***

The sheer arrogance left me stunned!

Aha!! Apologies, I hadn't gotten that far.

Yes indeed - either a victim in need or rescue or a sinner in need of saving!!!

The message does need to get out that that these organisations are not the voice for all escorts! I know you have been working on that misconception for years Eillen. Hopefully the message will get across depending on how many escorts make submissions regarding the legislation consultation process.

The sheer cheek of it absolutely staggered me, it is as if they think we are all completely illiterate and incapable of reading or contradicting a statement like that.

Saoirse, if you want to say these things I really think you should go say them yourself. You are very articulate...and more than capable of presenting your own views.
