http://www.thejournal.ie/leitrim-first-council-to-call-for-ban-on-buying-sex-485879-Jun2012/

Once again elected officials ignorant of the facts are seeking to criminalise consenting adults and are being egged on by a self-centred NGO who knows little and cares less about the men, women and transexuals involved who have chosen this line of work of their own free will.

They never stopped before...if sex work is the oldest profession, prohibitionists exploiting it must be the second oldest...

But frankly...if they have truly conquered Leitrim...then it is all over for us... :(

Hmmm, a very interesting post http://feministire.wordpress.com/2012/05/20/there-was-no-lack-of-buyers-swedish-sex-trafficking-trial-concludes/, something which Ruhama would never let on to.

(Guess who is so incredibly smart she missed the whole point that it is in "The Journal"?)

I don't think they actually enforce any kind of law in Leitrim...treat it all more as general guidelines...

Ok, time to stop doing my Evita act on crime.ie and take a PROPER look :)

Maybe it's because Leitrim good a really bad review in the "Dirty Arses Poll”. Do any of you remember that, I seem to recall escorts made reference to Leitrim been one of the worst places for dirty asses, so our "Councillors" have taken exception.

Oh and of course none of these fine upstanding "Honest" guys would dare partake in this filth or in thier words debased behaviour......except of course when they are abroad on a fact finding trip, or for the ordinary man and woman a Junket and no doubt claim the “activity” back on expenses.....

Frankly, I think the heating and plumbing arrangements still prevalent in most of Leitrim explain that...

Chances are they got the wrong end of the stick and thought they were being offered a Swedish Model http://www.sevenreflections.com/images/people/Elin_Nordegren.jpg

...and will be no end of disappointed when they worked out what they were really conned into voting for...

Did not one of these muppets voting on the council have the guts or the brains to dissent?!

We really need a lobby group or organisation that has a large profile and has more muscle to deal with Ruhama and co.

It is very depressing that the TOTBL website has not had a facelift since 2011. That Google ad that it had was very useful and it is a shame that it is gone.

LaBelleThatcher and others of like mind on E-I I salute you and stop-the-lights.com is bang on the button about many things. However I think that we need scores upon scores of individuals who are knowledgeable about sex work pounding the message to politicians and media figures etc.

Everybody can have a role to play- punters included. For example money could be donated to fund a larger campaign. Personally I would be prepared to walk miles to put money in a letter box if I knew it was going towards a stepped up campaign against Ruhama.

Jack, I have been saying much the same since I signed up here.

I suggested that a female solicitor be hired to act as an official spokesperson for independent sex workers, I've posted links to places where the issues were being discusssed in the hope that some of the ladies would take the time to post there, but nobody apart from Eileen and Saoirse bothered as far as I can see (apologies if anyone else has). I offered to contribute towards some sort of ad campaign, I never got a single PM about that. I also suggested that some of the ladies might write an article for theJournal.ie, again nothing.

Ruhama have been engaging in a Hit-and-Run campaign where they will write an article, issue a statement, etc, and have it posted online somewhere, but the author or spokesperson will never return to it themselves to debate the issues they raise. The most recent example of this was the article on Crime.ie that Sarah Benson herself penned, at present it has twelve comments posted, yet not a single response to any of the comments from the author herself. This shouldn't really suprise anyone because Ruhama don't want an open and honest debate on the issue.

Hello all!

It's vital that prostitutes do their part by countering these monolithic organizations before the government tries to suppress the sex industry further. These organizations proclaim that all prostitution is ''forced''. Couldn't be further from the truth. I have yet to meet a single prostitute who was 'forced' into the business. When a woman decides to become a prostitute out of her own choice, this is not ''forced prostitution''.

Please, I recommend confidential interviews with the media so that this message gets out loud and clear. Otherwise, we risk loosing the remaining freedom to a bunch of right-wing conservatives.

Kiss,
Patrick.

I think "Eleen" on thejournal is probably from here...and a few guys showed up :)

I am used to this crap from other areas, but I can sympathise with anyone who can't face it, it is psychological warfare and very toxic to walk into. With all the existing stigma they have loads to play on...and they are not above threatening individuals.

BUT...

The truth is, a lot of laws get passed on the assumption that "nobody minds" - because nobody jumps up and down and says so.

Patrick, just a friendly hint...it really is not ever a good entree to refer to any group of ladies as "prostitutes". The ladies here mostly prefer to be called escorts.

But everything else you said is dead sound. :)

That ok, everyone makes silly mistakes after reading too much mindbending prohibitionist codswallop, I have to watch myself that I don't start referring to a crowd of lads as "rapists" all the time...honest... :)

Half Man and Half Dildo,

You have a point. As many escorts on this site and elsewhere need to be active commenting on discussions etc that are in the media. This is one step. There is no obligation to give your real name and Minnie Mouse even could be given as a user name. These sort of comments coming from people in the know will have more weight. Even doing it sometimes would be better than nothing.

Hiring a female solicitor as a spokesperson is quite a good idea.

Maybe Ireland with a small and often relatively close knit population has a small pool of people willing to speak out. We need to turn things to our advantage though. We have unique links to many countries around the world. Also because of the small population here it should be a doddle to saturate the country with our message compared to a bigger place. American canidates during primaries have to cover similiar populations in a matter of days (not that we have a tiny fraction of the funds or clout that they have!).

From my expreience of being on this website there are at least 10 escorts that comment regurlarly and who would be able to make a good impact on other forums.

Another good step would be to be on Niall Boylan's talk show. You would be pushing an open door. He is quite sympathetic to escorts and has 101% respect for them.

From what I was saying earlier maybe we need to start looking for help in England and beyond. If we had a few attack dog sex workers on our side completely not afraid of negative local reaction that would be super. Speaking of the Niall Boylan Show an escort called Tina (who I think was based in England) was on air a few times and put our case very well.

I would love to see someone like Pye Jakobsson (who hails from Sweden) come to Ireland to hold seminars, press conferences, etc.
She does travel, last year she attended a conference in Beirut. I think an invite is in order.
