There is a discussion about sex workers on 4FM tonight (07-12-2011 after 9pm) on The Late Show with Niall Boylan. Text or call in what you think. Call 1850 410 494 or text 53 544. This time the angle is about all the people arrested by undercover Gardai in Limerick and whether they should be "named and shamed" or not. The subject might be a bit restricted but there is no harm in giving a general opinion that criminalising the clients of sex workers is unacceptable and backward.

I missed that program on Wednesday evening and looked it up later on on the internet. As it is a rather long program, I fell asleep before it had reached the topic being discussed. Does anyone know at what time that topic came up?

I agree with your point regarding the risk of this leading to suicides. If you look at the statistics on suicide, you will see that it is primarily an issue for young males, but there has also been a lot of debate around single men, whether young, middle aged or elderly living in rural isolation. Now if you look through the names, ages and addresses of those caught by the police sting operation in Limerick, some could fall within this category. The problems of the single rural male have often been highlighted and for many, this may be the only form of intimate physical contact they have had or are ever likely to have with a female. It is just a pity, that for whatever reason, they sought to fulfil their needs via the street trade rather than the somewhat safer, off-street trade.

My main arguement against criminalising the clients, has not been that it will increase the incidence of the crime or rape, but that it will leave a lot of men out there much lonelier, much more depressed and more at risk of suicide, if the release value of escorts is no longer a safe option.
