Just saw a report on the new Bill on the programme "The Week In Politics" which was surprisingly balanced. There was an interview with an Irish sex worker with a Swedish friend in the industry who said it was a disaster for sex workers, an academic who was interviewed by The JOC who said she was treated unfairly when trying to put pro sex worker views to those nutters, David Walsh (who is he?) made an appearance as a sex work advocate and on the other side we had Sarah (looking like a typical ravishing Irish MILF!) claiming the main focus will be on targeting Pimps rather than small fry punters (well actually the main focus will be on collecting fines off punters' backs making the state the nastiest pimp of all) and The Minister For The Interior, spouting nonsense about trafficking (it's doing nothing to prevent this evil where it exists in reality) and misguidedly saying there has been a trend towards these type of laws (there hasn't, in effective it has been rejected recently where it has been attempted except up North!) and also pointing out it was modernising our laws - What putting the lives of sex workers at very real risk?
And not a Justine Reilly or Rachel Moran in sight!
Joan Collins TD (no, not the babe from Dynasty) was supportive of known sex worker advocate Claire Daly, which is very good! And Aine lawlor extended the debate into a wish to see more cross party supported laws when bringing in Dickey Bruton and McGrath of FF!
It's worth a watch and will be on later tonight also and available on the I-Player!
But for better or worse there is still a bit to go before this insanity becomes law, so lets not be complacent and become as active as we can!
Interestingly, with our Minister for the interior strongly promoting it, her colleague the minister for the interior in Finland, a lady also, was absolutely gagging for it, but her cabinet colleagues told her 'no' and they have a law similar to the England/Wales one on having sex with a coerced woman which isn't a bad law!

Well Done, again!
You most definitely are doing your very best to stop this madness!

I've seen it suggested—I don't know if it's true— that

1. Clients are less inclined to call the cops if the provider has been trafficked, for fear that they (the clients) will be prosecuted

2. If a provider is in a country voluntarily but illegally, he/she may say that they have been trafficked if raided by the cops, thinking that this will get their status legalised.

When pointed out to The Minister for The Interior, this law will be very difficult to enforce, she replied that's not a reason for not having it!
Well maybe, the well known effects of it making life hell on earth for sex workers and that absolutely no good can come of this law whatsoever (client criminalisation for engaging in consensual acts) should be more than sufficient for any reasonable human being too reject it out of hand completely!

Interestingly while we're all focused on the likely criminalisation of clients ,I have heard of thesympathetic treatment of an escort(who I know well) at the hands of our police force.Raided, front door broken down, appartment torn apart, money and bank a/c seized, left penniless, worried how to pay due rent on appartment&escort site, supporting family at home, facing potential prosecution, fearing prison and/or deportation, having been strip-searched,usual bullying/manipulation of Templemore Twats(Hi to any snooping). Some escorts will also be collateral damage as An Garda Siochaina gets a boost to its self-importance.So don't overly expect too much sympathy from the regime of Frances Fitzgerald or any other craw thumping, holier than thou merchants in politics.B.T.W. she didn't receive much hel from fellow escort "friends" who ran fairly fast covering their own arses.

As a P.S. to above ,it was continously put to the lady in question that she
(a)had pimps.
(b)that she had been trafficked.
A true trafficked person would face considerable trauma having this type of treatment doled out to them-which belies the idea of much sympathy for escorts in the justice system at large.Indeed it demonstrates a certain disrespect for both women and foreign nationals.

I worry about the foreign nationals as I am afraid they'll go after to those girls the most and their clients :-( The press officer was saying to the woman who interviewed me that they'll be concentrating on trafficked women's clients. The Swedish police has spent a quarter of its trafficking budget to criminalise clients I am curious how this will play out here.

It's well known by its supporters that this insane law causes more suffering to Sex Workers than anyone else! They are seen as acceptable collateral damage to get an insane point across (women aren't for sale, well in a Consenting commercial sex setting, nobody actually is for sale, just sexual services for rent!) or to get increased funding for NGOs prominent in TORLER to help 'rescue' fallen women, exactly as happened with the orders of nuns behind Ruhama who ran the Magdelyne Laundries!

Almost all escorts advertising here are of foreign origin and I doubt if trafficking is an issue, but we must remain vigilant in stopping that incredible evil where it exists outside of TV dramas where it's most prominent!!
