Drivers' numbers
Note: Under a new rule, drivers pick their preferred race numbers. If there was a clash, priority went to the driver placed higher in the 2013 championship.

As world champion, Sebastian Vettel has exercised his right to use one in 2014 and has picked five for rest of his career.

Alonso, who was runner-up to Vettel in 2013, has chosen 14 because he used it during his teenage years in karting and he considers it lucky.

The famously unemotional Raikkonen said he picked seven because "it's the number I already had last year and I saw no reason to change it".

Button asked for 22 because it was the number on his Brawn car when he won his sole world title in 2009.

The full 2014 F1 entry list is as follows, with the drivers' race number listed first:

1 Sebastian Vettel (Ger) Red Bull-Renault
3 Daniel Ricciardo (Aus) Red Bull-Renault
44 Lewis Hamilton (GB) Mercedes
6 Nico Rosberg (Ger) Mercedes
14 Fernando Alonso (Spa) Ferrari
7 Kimi Raikkonen (Fin) Ferrari

Does at the moment. Seb looks unlikely to get his fifth title in a row on present form.
Renault engines seem to be having the worst of the unreliability problems.

I wouldn't put it past Red Bull for them to correct the faults and have a competitive car a few races in, but currently the new car looks slow and unreliable.

Lol... Great quote from the master of understatement :)

It should be interesting with Raikkonen and Alonso both at Ferrari...

Interesting too with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg seemed able to match Schumacher sometimes, and he seems faster than Hamilton. He certainly has a better temperament than Hamilton.

After today's testing, and with only three more testing sessions to go, and the first race on 16 March in Albert Park in Australia, Renault's engine problems continue.

With overheating turbo s and energy recovery systems not working, the teams they supply - Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Caterham and Lotus are going to have difficulty even finishing races.

I wait with interest on what the next three days of testing will bring.........

Another big story is that Ross Brawn is telling people he has retired from Motorsport.

When he left Mercedes last year he was expected to take a short break and then join another team.

Of course, a man of his talent, how long before some team makes him an offer he can't refuse?

"Persuaded" as in if he's offered enough cash.... Lol

The guy is a genius and he will be missed in the sport.... But I can't see him staying away for too long.

Although money is huge in the sport I think the roll he has in the team is more important. I'm sure thats why he left mercedes in the first place! I know he was Team Principle but think there was disagreements as to his ecxpectations of his roll! I may be wrong. Besides in F1 its always gonna be big money ;)

He certainly is a genius.
Motor sport is in his blood. I reckon a year out & he'll miss the smell of petrol & burning rubbing & be back the following season :D

The 28th of February (today) is homologation day for engines. This means after today, teams can only change parts in the name of safety, reliability and cost-cutting.

Renault (surprise!) has requested an extension at today’s meeting of the rule-making body.
But this rule exists because Renault threatened to quit if it was not introduced. :)
Also, all the teams have already had an extra year to develop the engines, again at the request of Renault.

In theory, Renault would need agreement from all the other teams to change the rule. A rule Renault lobbied for, and now want changed.

Is this Renault on the way out in F1? Is it just too expensive for them? Present problems are being blamed on lack of investment for the new turbo V-6's

Honda is coming back to F1 in 2015, supplying engines to McLaren.
Honda's F1 base is going to be in Milton Keynes. Red Bull are just down the road……..:D

Surprised at that. I thought McLaren were trying to construct their own engines. Must have hit a snag somewhere. But sure if the McLaren-Honda partnership is as successful as the last time they won't care

Pre-season testing can be an unreliable indicator of true form.

But reliability looks like it will be an issue for all the teams.
Not only does the complexity of the engines lead to unreliability, but makes the engines much harder and time consuming to fix when something does go wrong.

At the moment there appears to be a pecking order in both reliability and speed.

Mercedes engines which power Mercedes, Williams, Force India and McLaren look the best.

Ferrari which powers Ferrari, Sauber and Marussia are a clear second.

Renault are in a poor third place at present. Renault power Lotus, Caterham and Toro Rosso, and of course last years runaway champions, Red Bull.

Most teams will have an upgrade package for the first race, but still it looks like it will be an interesting season when the 65th Formula One Season starts in Australia in Melbourne, with testing/qualifying on 14-15 March, and the race on the 16 March.

:lmao: Stranger things have happened. In 1984, Nigel Mansell famously collapsed while pushing his car to the finish line after the transmission failed on the last lap of the Dallas Grand Prix. The race was one of the hottest on record, and he had been driving 2 hours in 104 °F (about 40 °C). He still managed to finish sixth. This gave him one championship point.

This would be illegal under the rules now.

And on current form, Seb would have to push a lot further..........

SteveB
03-03-14, 18:46
Jack Brabham, in the 1959 United States Grand Prix ran out of fuel within sight of the finish line while he was leading the race.

He pushed the car to the line, and still came fourth. He won the championship by four points.

I think realistically in Melbourne it is a race between four teams.
The four teams that run Mercedes power-plants. Mercedes, Williams, McLaren and Force India.
 Lewis Hamilton must be the favourite. His natural racing talent is beyond question, but his temperament is suspect and he has had problems in the past managing less than ideal or sick cars.
 His team mate Nico Rosberg is usually slightly slower but has a much better temperament and would manage a malfunctioning car better.
 Jenson Button is easily the most technically proficient driver with regard to racing lines and throttle control of his generation. He must be another contender. [Of course there is a lot more to winning races than technical proficiency. Schumacher and Alonso being examples of drivers who are not very technically proficient on paper].
 Sergio Perez Outside chance. Possible up-and-coming star.
 Felipe Massa Guy who came very close to winning a championship, and with his talent and temperament should have won at least one. His chance seems to have gone. Would be a popular winner at Melbourne, but I can’t see it.

Whole thing could of course be a shambles with poor reliability with the new engines and the added problem of rain. It could be more about endurance and keeping running more than racing. Too chaotic to call. But if I had to put money on one driver, it would be Lewis Hamilton.

Agreed........When is the last time any of the races matched (for excitement) a senna blitz in the rain or a senna/mansell dice to the finish around Monaco?
The cars nowdays are too clinical, with too much input from external influences such as software and the drivers...............well,not a senna esque personality between the lot of em
I remember the days when bike racing was similar.Gardiner,Schwantz,Lawson,Spencer, all in the same race and all masters at what they did
F1 used to be the same...Prost,Mansell,Senna,Piquet all in the same race and ALL capable of winning after racing a hard race with no driver aids or software bullshit
These days both bikes (Marquez aside) and F1 are full of boring bastards with the same personalities as modern day soccer players who dive at the slightest opportunity and forget what their heroes were like back in the day! .I don't follow soccer at all,but I can appreciate the mastery of of an old George Best clip when put in front of me.

But even back in the Prost/Senna days at McLaren, they had the best machinery, so I think F1 has never been a even playing field. I like all the new technology, although I do think the cars this year sound really horrible...

I don't mind the sound, they could do with turning up the microphones a bit though as the commentary is too loud in comparison.

I'm slightly worried about Mercedes completely dominating the season too even if it is good to see Red Bull struggling. It looks like a two horse race between Rosberg and Hamilton for the title already.

Agreed - I hope no one team dominates, but even if the Mercedes powered cars are the ones to beat this year you have Mercedes, McLaren, Williams, Force India, so it hopefully won't be boring. I'm sure Red Bull and Lotus will make up ground soon enough.

And you can never ignore Ferrari.... :)

McLaren, Williams and FI all seem a good bit behind though, Rosberg had plenty to spare.
I can see Red Bull doing well on tracks with mid to high speed corners like last season. Ferrari have a good car but are down on power, Alonso struggled badly for top speed against Hulkenberg.

I suppose anything is better than Vettel disappearing away in the distance and at least Rosberg and Hamilton are well matched.

Agreed. I also don't believe people really want a level playing field, if they did they'd be watching the A1 grand prix instead. Besides, the real race in F1 has always been the one going on between team mates, the one that team orders were fucking with for so long. There were no team orders back when Prost and Senna were doing there thing.

Mercedes. Why are their engines better?
How are they suddenly much better than their rivals?

The new F1 engines have two different pieces of hybrid (electric) technology.
A combined motor/generator unit recovers kinetic(electric) energy during braking, stores it in a battery and uses it during acceleration. The amount of energy that can be used is limited by F1 rules

A second unit attached to the turbo recovers energy from the turbo. This energy can be used to either spin up the turbo prior to the driver pressing the accelerator ─ removing the 'turbo lag', ─ or applied directly to the rear wheels to increase power.
This is unlimited by F1 rules so is effectively 'free' power for the engine and so is very important. This is the Mercedes secret. Inspired turbo design
A turbo has two parts joined together. One part, joined to the exhaust pipe, is driven by exhaust gases. This is connected to a compressor, that drives air into the engine. Problem ─ Because the air is close to the hot exhaust, it becomes hot. The colder and denser the air is, more power comes from the engine. One solution (used in F1) is to pass the air through an intercooler.
Mercedes genius is to split the turbo in two. One part is at the front of the engine and the other at the back.

This keeps the air cooler, which means smaller intercoolers, reducing weight and taking up less space.
The airflow has much less distance to travel from the intake, through the compressor and intercooler into the cylinders. This reduces the pressure loss at the compressor, which increases power.
The design reduces dramatically the amount of piping required for the engine, giving a significant advantage both in total mass and weight distribution in the car.
It also reduces lag in the turbo to almost nothing.
The reduction in the ancillaries - reduced intercooler size and less piping - means the bodywork can be more compact, giving better aerodynamics.
The gearbox can also be moved forward, which gives better weight distribution and centralises the mass of the car, allowing a more effective change of direction and use of the front tyres, which helps with braking and therefore energy harvesting.
All good.
But the problem is that the two parts have to be connected by a shaft that spins at 120,000rpm. Recipe for disaster if there is the slightest imbalance or problem. But Mercedes have made it work.

Ferrari, incredibly, had the same idea as Mercedes. But they were concerned about a long shaft and vibrations, lost their nerve, and used a half-assed version of the Mercedes idea, with a much shorter shaft.
Are they regretting it now?

Renault are using the conventional one-piece turbo.

The Circuit de Catalunya marks the start of Formula One's European season.

The Mercedes engine cannot be bettered on power. Red Bull's major weakness has been their lack of speed on the straights because of their Renault power unit. However, the Red Bulls are the quickest cars on high-speed corners, which place a greater emphasis on aerodynamic downforce than enginepower. The Circuit de Catalunya with its corners, should suit them more than Bahrain and China, which are predominantly power circuits.

This is also Fernando Alonso’s home track. He will be hoping to do well here.

The Barcelona track could limit Mercedes' power advantage. But with the Mercedes engine advantage at over a second a lap, it is unlikely to prevent this being a race between the two Mercedes. The only way Red Bull (or Ferrari), in my opinion, can compete, is to use a Mercedes engine:) Indeed, with Red Bull aerodynamics and Mercedes enginepower, such a car would be unbeatable!

Rosberg and Hamilton are locked in a battle at the top of the drivers' standing. The German continues to lead thanks to his Australian Grand Prix win, but a run of three straight wins has allowed Hamilton to whittle the advantage down to just four points.

I think this is an important race for Lewis Hamilton. If Sebastian Vettel were to become unhappy at Red Bull, as a German where would he what to go? Mercedes is a German team, and two German drivers would just suit them fine….

But Lewis’s position is not really in doubt. Nigel Mansell commented that his driving is near perfection. He also said, “No one wins a championship in a bad car, but only a good driver can win in a good car.” Mercedes is the best car.

Daniel Ricciardo appears to be a better driver than Sebastian Vettel. But I don’t think so. I think Daniel Ricciardo, like Fernando Alonso is just more realistic and is managing his tyres. Vettel, as defending champion, with a lot to lose, is going all out in an inferior car, and so not managing his tyres so well.

Hamilton wins again and now leads the championship but had to hold off a late charge from Rosberg. For all his trouble in qualifying, Vettel did great to finish 4th

Without the late charge from Rosberg that would go down as a terrible boring race. Really the other teams need to up their game, or the audience will start to switch off. There is nothing worse than F1 when one team is so far ahead. Would have been good to watch vettel had he qualified a bit better.

F1 legend Jack Brabham passed away at his home in Australia earlier today. Survived 15 years in Formula One at a time when it was at its most dangerous was an impressive enough feat but also served as a team owner/constructor. Indeed he won the last of his 3 World titles driving a car he built himself.

The Circuit de Monaco is unusual because it has been held on the same circuit, every time it has been run, over such a long period of time.

The race circuit has many elevation changes, tight corners, and a narrow course that makes it one of the most demanding tracks in Formula One racing. It is the only Grand Prix that does not adhere to the FIA's mandated 305 kilometres (190 mi) minimum race distance. It contains both the slowest corner in Formula One (the Grand Hotel hairpin, taken at just 48 km/h (30 mph)) and one of the quickest (the flat out kink in the tunnel, three turns beyond the hairpin, taken at 260 km/h (160 mph)).

It is considered the ultimate test of driving skills.
If it were not already an existing Grand Prix, it would not be permitted to be added to the schedule for safety reasons.
Michael Schumacher said it was, “Worth the risk, once a year.”
Nelson Piquet said that, "A win here was worth two anywhere else"

Dangerous as it is, there have been many serious accidents, but only one fatal formula one accident. Lorenzo Bandini died as a result of burns suffered in a crash in 1967. Outside of formula one, there have been three other deaths, one of them in a motorcycle race.

The most famous accident, however, must be that of Alberto Ascari, who crashed into the harbour in 1955. In 1965, Paul Hawkins also crashed into the harbour.

The race is considered one of the most prestigious motor races, part of the triple crown of motorsport alongside the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. Graham Hill was known as "Mr Monaco" in recognition of his five wins at the event — he is also the only man to have achieved the “triple crown”. His record at Monaco was beaten by Ayrton Senna who won six times, including five back-to-back wins between 1989 and 1993.
Juan Pablo Montoya, who won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2003 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2000, is the only driver still alive who has won two of the three races.

The building of the circuit takes six weeks, and the dismantling after the race another three weeks. The practises are Thursday and Saturday, instead of Friday and Saturday. There is no practice on Friday, to allow life in the city to be as normal on race weekend as possible.

The only Monaco-born driver to have won a race there (1931) is Louis Alexandre Chiron (born 3 August 1899 in Monte Carlo, Monaco – died there on 22 June 1979) Louis Chiron is also the oldest driver who has ever taken part in a Formula One Grand Prix. In his last F1 race, the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix, he was 58 years old.

Because of its tight confines, slow average speeds and punishing nature, Monaco has often thrown up unexpected results.

Olivier Panis drove in Formula One for ten seasons, scoring only one win, at the eventful 1996 Monaco Grand Prix for the Ligier team. He is the last French driver to win a Formula One Grand Prix.
In 1972 Jean-Pierre Beltoise won in the wet but he, like Panis, never again won a Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton’s odds on a win on Sunday are quoted at 1 / 4, but it is such an unpredictable race, and with rain forecast, again the result could be something unexpected.

Monaco Grand prix Qualifying at 13:00 today.

Hard to predict qualifying or the race at Monaco.

Daniel Ricciardo is second quickest, 0.05 seconds slower than Lewis Hamilton.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg made mistakes. Similar mistakes in qualifying could put a Red Bull or Fernando Alonso on pole.

Also the speed of the Mercedes could be nullified by safety cars, and safety cars are almost certain at Monaco.

My own opinion is that the Mercedes are just too quick, and that Lewis Hamilton just has the edge on Nico Rosberg. Even at Monaco, possible Mercedes one-two, with a Lewis Hamilton win.

SteveB
24-05-14, 11:08
Is Lewis Hamilton about to become a Monaco multiple winner? (He won in 2008, a win tomorrow would give him two)
Nico Rosberg won last year. Win tomorrow would put him in with the multiple winners

Or, less likely, can Fernando Alonso win tomorrow to give him three? That would put him in with the legends Moss and Stewart.
Sebastian Vettel has not been particularly good at Monaco. He did win in 2011, in an accident packed race which saw two drivers hospitalised. A win tomorrow would also see him join the multiple winners.

Nico Rosberg is being investigated after an incident in Q3, where he inadvertently protected his pole position by an error at Mirabeau on his final run, sliding up the escape road and bringing out the yellow flags. Everyone behind Rosberg - including Hamilton who had just set a personal best first sector - were thus unable to improve.
[Eight years ago, Michael Schumacher was stripped of pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix after race stewards decided the German deliberately stopped on the track after running wide, stopping rivals setting a faster time. The inquiry took EIGHT hours.]

Daniel Ricciardo again out qualifies reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The top six positions are locked out by Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari, in that order.
Should be good race tomorrow (Race tomorrow 13:00). All the top drivers up front, and Monaco usually throws up a few surprises.

Rumours that Lewis Hamilton is not too happy with his team-mate.

There was a meeting on Thursday where Mercedes bosses and the two drivers attempted to sort out future policy regarding competition between them. Alain Prost's advice was sought because of his experience of the rivalry between him and Ayrton Senna.

Yet another thing that could make tomorrow's race interesting!

One thing that irks me about hamilton is he blames everything and everyone for his failings bar himself. If its not the tyre's, its the car, if not the car the weather.

Canadian Grand Prix due to start in just over an hour.

Should be a good race. Nico Rosberg is on pole. But he has never done well on this circuit, while Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver on this circuit since Michael Schumacher.

There is less than four hundredths of a second between Sebastian Vettel, Valtteri Bottas, Felipe Massa, and Daniel Ricciardo. Could be a lot of action here.
Might not have to wait long for it either, because the first corner could be interesting.

Probably two races within a race. The race between Hamilton and Rosberg.
Then the race between Vettel, Bottas, Massa and Ricciardo. And even though the Ferraris have been disappointing this weekend, Alonso cannot be excluded in the race for “the best of the rest”.

And of course we have the ‘wall of champions’ on the outside of Turn 14.
Pastor Maldonado may not be a champion, but I think the wall has his name on it.
If he misses the wall, he is certain to hit something.

The fastest lap in a Formula One race at this circuit was 1:15.841 by Kimi Räikkönen.

The fastest ever lap ever was set by Ralf Schumacher, 1:12.275. Because this was during qualifying, it is not recognised as an official lap record.

Safety car already, Bianchi accident. Hit his team mate Chilton. This is Chilton,s first non-finish. That's both Marussia's out. Hamilton made a good start, but Rosberg took first back and Hamilton dropped to third, overtaken by Vettel. Pity about safety car, was good racing.

Indeed. Perez has now got a five-place grid penalty for Austria for impeding Massa in their battle for fourth place.
Perez collided with Massa on the final lap pitching both cars into the Turn 1 barriers at speed.

I wonder has there been any modifications to the track since the last time it staged a Grand Prix

Have not heard or read anything specific.

QUOTE "The Red Bull Ring has been significantly upgraded since it last hosted Formula One racing between 1997 and 2003, it is also not too dissimilar to Montreal’s Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve - which means fuel consumption and brake wear are expected to be high. Four long straights will help cooling, and also mean high top speeds will once again be crucial to success - while one tricky aspect is that all the major braking zones are uphill, which can make overtaking difficult as the braking distances are reduced."

Could that mean a repeat of the problems of the last Grand Prix?

Quote = "The BBC F1 team were asked to provide their own personal top 20s, which were combined to produce a BBC list. Veteran commentator Murray Walker provides his own reflections in a video of their career highlights, and chief F1 writer Andrew Benson profiles the driver".

Williams are looking good. They have Mercedes engine-power and if only they could sort out their mistakes, both in management and in strategy, they could have a good race.

I think again the two Mercedes team cars must be favourites, with Lewis Hamilton looking faster than Nico Rosberg.

I am happy for Massa. First pole position , after 2008 !!

Felipe Massa is too good a driver to have never won a championship.
He was Number two to Michael Schumacher and suffered under team orders. When Michael retired, he did lead the championship for Ferrari, but again because of team orders, lost out to Kimi Räikkönen.

He almost won in 2008. In fact he was champion for a few seconds when he crossed the line, but in the final corners on the last lap, Lewis Hamilton passed Timo Glock to get fifth place, and that meant that Hamilton beat Massa to the title by a single point.

The dignity and sportsmanship that he displayed after that bitter defeat characterised the man and he has always been popular. His good spirits and happy nature comes over well in all his TV interviews.

Perez drops to eleven because of his penalty.
Mercedes team looking into cause of Lewis’s spin. My apologies, he will start ninth, not tenth.
Personally, I think he just took a chance and waited until the last possible moment when the track was well rubbered in, and went for a last supreme effort. He has done that before and it has worked. This time it didn’t, he spun and didn’t have time for another lap.

“Hammy” could have a problem. Rosberg qualified third. (Rosberg blamed his third place on Hamilton, saying his spin held him up).
At present Rosberg has a lead of twenty-two points. If Rosberg finishes significantly ahead of Hamilton tomorrow, he could have a lead that would be hard to overtake.

Mercedes one-two in Austria is their sixth of the season.

Lewis Hamilton is now twenty-nine points behind Nico Rosberg, four more points than a race win.

There is fifty-three points between Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton, but in reality Red Bull do not have the car to challenge Mercedes, their race is to be “the best of the rest”.

Williams are fast because they are using a Mercedes engine. Could have had a better result today with better strategy and a bit of better luck. But their poor start to the season has left them with a lot of ground to recover.
Rob Smedley certainly earning his salary, big changes in results since he arrived, can’t be coincidence.
