Just joined after looking for many weeks and noticed some options to me as a now member but my question is what is the difference between a personal or private message and a visitor message and why have both?

A visitor message is something that can be seen on your profile for all the world to see so best left to simple non personal messages, a private message is just that, a private message you send to a member or members (max 3 at a time) that can only be seen /read by the recipient ;)
