View Full Version : Just For Senator Martin Conway

Remember him?

Lillian Andreeva sent him a very concise, well thought out email, his response was to tell her that, unless she gave him her phone number he would disregard the contents of her email?

I mailed him, on Tues 8 January endorsing her mail, with my landline, mobile, contact detail and an invitation to my house should he really need to do that...he responded promptly and told me he would call "in the next few days"

Now there is nothing strange about TD's and Senators saying they will do things they will not do. Sometimes it is even genuine oversight...but Senator Martin Conway tried to bully an escort into giving him her phone number by refusing to take her simple truth seriously unless she gave it.

He is a VERY special case of ignorance indeed.

This is the way politicans work promise you the world and only see you when they need your vote there all the same never trust them .

Richie,

I think this guy took that to an WHOLE NEW LEVEL when he tried to pressure Lillian Andreeva into giving him her phone number by saying he would not pay any attention to her email otherwise.

One of the ladies was brave enough to try and reach him, and reason with him, and his response is to try and bully her out of a phone number he probably had no intention of using...

WHAT IS THAT ABOUT????

I have just done some digging, and realised that Martin Conway is visually impaired which means he probably finds it hard it communicate in writing but there is a WORLD of difference between saying:

"You may not realise, but I am visually impaired and would find it a lot easier to discuss this over the phone"

and

"Unless you send me a phone number I am going to disregard your email" which is *ALL* he said to Lillian Andreeva, for which there is absolutely no excuse without some explanation.

(It goes without saying that harvesting phone numbers under duress is not a terribly effective accommodation for visual impairment unless you actually bother to follow up and dial them!).

He probably has some other agenda dont like the way he was looking for phone numbers not very nice .

LaBelleThatcher

I agree with you...because for anyone savvy with a disability, politely and tactfully requesting the accommodations you need, without making people uncomfortable, is as automatic as shaking hands.

...and it still doesn't explain why he hasn't called me as he *offered* to.

Labelle, it's possible that he wanted to speak to Lillian in order to verify that the email was genuine - as far as I know newspapers require name, address, and phone number before they will publish a letter - perhaps this was the same thing more or less, so maybe this was a missed opportunity on Lillian's behalf.

I have tried to see it that way, and I think so has Lillian, but it doesn't fit the way it was worded:

If you provide me with your mobil number I would be happy to discuss
this matter further with you. Otherwise I will be disregarding this
email.

Apart from which the mail which was sent to him was far too generic to require validation before attention:

Dear Mr Conway,

I am writing to express my concern over the Justice Committee on
Prostitution Hearings. So far the only organisations that have been
invited to give evidence at the hearings are those organisations which
are members of the "Turn Off The Red Light" coalition which falsely
claims to represent the interests of sex workers. With the exception
of opinions presented by Dr Gillian Wylie and Dr Eilís Ward, there was
very little balance to the proceedings and a real lack of difficult
questioning for TORL.

It must be said that the proposals being pushed by TORL campaign will
have hugely negative consequences not only for civil liberties and
overstretched police resources but above all to sex workers
themselves. The flaws of the “Swedish Model” are well documented by
academic research studiously ignored by the TORL campaign. To name one
example, a 2011 study on the Swedish law found several "reports of
serious adverse effects of the Sex Purchase Act – especially
concerning the health and well-being of sex workers – in spite of the
fact that the lawmakers stressed that the ban was not to have a
detrimental effect on people in prostitution.”
http://gup.ub.gu.se/records/fulltext/140671.pdf

Consequently the Swedish Model is increasingly being recognised for
what it is: a failed attempt at social engineering. Last year the
Danish government scrapped plans to introduce the Model there and
Oslo’s Social Affairs Chief has urged for the sex-purchase law to be
rescinded as a recent report shows a significant rise in violence
against prostitutes working in the city.

It would therefore be impossible for the Committee to come to a
sensible and informed decision if only plans to hear the very
selective information supplied by the TORL campaign. I may be mistaken
in assuming this is the Committee’s intention but there is of yet no
information available as to who will be invited to the next hearings.
Can you please provide assurances that the views of actual sex workers
as well as those of academics, campaigners and experts who oppose
client-criminalisation will be fully represented at subsequent
hearings? It would be totally wrong and unfair for the government to
consider bringing in draconian new prostitution laws without
prostitutes themselves having been given sufficient opportunity to
voice their concerns and without considering the very serious expert
criticisms of the Swedish Model.

Yours sincerely,

This was his response to me at 11pm 8 January:

I will be in contact with you over the next couple of days. I will also speak to the justice committee exec to get n up to date position
Martin Conway

13 days later, I think Madonna TRULY says it all.

Thanks, Labelle, I see what you mean now.

Public pressure needs to be brought to bear on both Alan Shatter and the committee as there is a clear bias against sex workers.

You know what?

I am beginning to wonder if Alan Shatter is the only person worth appealing to?

(I hasten to add that Katherine Zappone has convinced me of her sincerity and concern, but at the end of the day I think her personal feelings and affiliations are just too strong to ever be *able* to see the real picture...it just won't be for want of trying is all)

I am not referring about Martin Conway here. I do not know him.

But I wonder.. If politicians visit escorts.. and lets face it they have loads of cash.. living in Dublin a few nights every week.... so they have opportunity...... is there fear among them that their association with escorts will be exposed? I know the ladies here are far too discrete to comment but it has me wondering. If politicians visit escorts, maybe they are afraid to give escorts any kind of opportunity to speak in case they expose them. I dont know if this makes any sense or am I spouting rubbish.... again?

Perhaps appealing to Alan Shatter is the way to go. At this stage there is nothing to loose.

Brilliant insight into what is going on behind the scenes, thanks and continued success.

I have never thought of it that way before, because I have always believed that every politician in that position who voted for the '93 without demanding amendment to exclude all reference to sex work (people forget, the '93 legislation was brought in as a footnote to legislation legalising the gay community under huge time pressure from Europe, as well as common decency - so none of the liberal TDs could vote against it, but they could have demanded amendments), should have been named and shamed...

...I believe even more that any politician in a similar position who votes for any further criminalisation in future (and particularly the Swedish Model) should be exposed in a heartbeat...there is only so much rank, self serving hypocrasy the world can accommodate...and that will be well over the line.

It never occurred to me that possibility could be a factor in the ongoing gagging of sex workers, in favour of orgs talking absolute b*llsh*t for shameless personal advantage, and other orgs with no knowledge of the sex industry at all...

...are our politicians so completely stupid that they have no idea what happens if you seal a pot, then turn up the heat under it?

Nice one Labelle. I like your choice of music. Have always been a Maddie fan! A girl who flaunted her sexuality in an unabashed and unrepentant fashion and now is an icon for generations (and not just for her music).

For those who didn't catch the lyrics in Madonna's "Hung up", the relevant chorus is:

"Wating for your call baby, night and day,
I'm fed up, I'm tired of wating on you"

So Senator Martin baby!! Don't say you're going to call if you really aren't!

Here's another great video of Madonna's from the same album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKnLyRaxRpk

The chorus says:

I heard it all before, I heard it all before , I heard it all before.....

I don't want to hear, I dont' want to know. Please don't say forgive me...

I heard it all before, I heard it all before , I heard it all before.....

You tell them Maddie!!
